Michael and Q-92.7

Hats off to Q-92.7 for their great coverage of Michael Jackson and his passing. They did it right, it was a calibration of the great music he has given us. Some stations played a song or two and some mentioned that he died but Q kept it going all evening long. They even had a call from their General Manager who was out of town tonight. It was a joyous night with the jocks debating their favorite MJ album and lots of reminiscing.

One of the other Charlotte stations did kind of an Entertainment Tonight style coverage, another station went all Michael but I never heard them say why until much later. Then there was one station that should have said something and should have been doing something but they are all Voicetrack most of the time. These stations know who they are I don't have to mention names.

I don't know anyone at Q in fact I usually don't listen to it. I just want to say the did it right, good job.

&, most stations that played any Michael Jackson music played "Thriller".

Even though it's an indescribable song, he has much more.

It's funny ET did the top 10 best selling MJ hits and "Thriller" wasn't on the list. Not sure the reason for that. #1 was Billie Jean. I tend to like the ballads and the lesser known hits like "One Day In Your Life".

I don't remember the timeline personally but some of the folks on WKRR 92.3 speculated that a lot of MJ's strangeness appeared after the Pepsi commercial accident when his hair caught on fire and he suffered burns. They seemed to think that might have traumatized him. I can believe that.

Some people may not have liked Jackson but this was a major story that deserved coverage on the stations that have played his music. You can bet people were talking about it at work on Friday.

Thriller was my favorite MJ song, and I really like the video, but the best part of it and to me what made it is the Vincent Price Narration at the end. There was nobody else alive at the time who could have pulled that off.

I googled top 10 MJ songs and found Thriller on most lists, usually at #3.

One list from Time had 3 Jackson 5 songs in their top 10, not really the top 10 Michael Jackson songs.
