Michael Baisden on a Gospel station??? Bad Idea????

Today, I heard that Michael Baisden is coming to Joy 92.5 in Jacksonville, FL, the new gospel/inspirational station, along with the Yolanda Adams Morning Show. I believe that it is a train wreck in the making because it will either confuse or turn off some listeners. Moreover, I believe some the controversial topics and music on the show might offend some of the listeners, especially those who are devout Christians. Does anyone else think that this is a BAD idea?

:'( This hurts my heart. My soul cries for my former beloved industry. This is a crazier move than placing Steve Harvey in morning on Hip Hop and R&B stations. What are they thinking???

I Like Baisden but yes I too think its a bad idea..but if you listen to the promos they say they are breaking all the rules....and two if they want to go after 101.5 just save a lil more cash and purchase 105.3 and add Baisden to that station...

Both 92.5 and 105.3 are part of the former Tama Group that is currently in receivership. The company that currently operates both stations is Straight Way Broadcasting. Furthermore, they also operate Joy 100.1 in Savannah, which is gospel like Joy 92.5 but it doesn't have the Michael Baisden Show, and WTMP 1150 AM in Tampa Bay, which is Urban AC and it has the Michael Baisden Show. Currently, 105.3 is a Spanish Tropical station called "Rumba 105.3", which is rather successful for a Latino station in Jacksonville since the Latino population is small in comparison to other Florida markets such as Orlando, Tampa, or Miami. According to the latest Arbitron ratings, the station had nearly a 1 share, which is respectable. In addition, the station is making money because I hear a lot of ads on this station so the station management will probably keep 105.3 as it is for now. Also, I agree with Younglee that Michael Baisden is a good show but it belongs on a R&B station rather than a gospel station.

That really a dumb move who owns that station?
@wdb2003 Are they serious. His topics are way too inapporite for the listeners of that station. I mean he gives advice about sex and he really talks it explicitly too. He talks about cheating spouses and how to use sex toys. What The H### is this industry coming to? If Micheal Baisden was live on the gospel he would probably be under the "bible belt". HYPOCRITES are who owns the station. Trust me there is nothing holier than thou about Michael Baisden.

It's on the air now. I bet there are a lot of shocked people who going to find R&B music playing on a gospel station. I can imagine some of the more conservative Christian people who listen to the station saying, "Why are they playing 'the devil's music' on 92.5'"?, and then turn the radio off ;D

How about Hip-Hop stations playing the Devil's music, but plays Gospel early weekday and Sunday mornings???

Damn talk about a delliema deluxe. R&B artist such as for example Kem, Remy Shand, Van Hunt, Eric Benét, Maxwell, Marsha Ambroius, Gary Taylor, Ruff Endz, Donell Jones and India Arie and Janet Jackson don't belong on a gospel station. Funny thought what if Big Boy's Neighbor was picked up by a gospel station? He plays "the devil's music"(Hip Hop & R&B) such as Snoop Dogg, Emeniem, Ludacris, Frank Ocean, Dr. Dre, Rhianna, Pitbull, Kreyshawn, Sean Pual, 2Pac, Lil' Wayne, Too Short, Warren G and The Luniz, etc now that's the devils music for ya ::).

The though is, if a Hip Hop station plays Gospel music on Sunday mornings, it is a way to reach out to those that aren't "saved." Reach them where they are. While I have heard Baisden a handful of times and really liked what I heard, it does not belong on a station that plays Gospel the rest of the day simply due to the nature of some of the topics that are discussed. Some of those church folks don't want to hear that stuff even if it is reality and some won't listen to anything secular.

Will it get ratings? Probably. Why? The old block programming concept deployed by MOR stations years ago. Why couldn't you have a station that played Inspiration in the Morning to start your day, dusty's during work, a contemporary ac mix with some jazz for pm drive and hip hop all night...in the military AFRTS did block programming all the rime...something for everybody. If we are going to survive as an industry we need to embrace new ideas and not be afraid to take risks instead of doing the same old thing because that's the way it's always been done. I kind of like the idea and I like that they are pushing the envelope and taking a risk. This is a brand new station with no history, so is to say you couldn't?

R&B/Hip Hop stations played Kirk Franklin's Stomp back in 1997. KKBT 92.3 The Beat played it in regular rotation which is ok because it sounded like everything else that they played, it made since to play Dru Hill's Never Make A Promise into that song. KKBT also played Trinitee 5:7's God's Grace in 1998 in regular rotation which also sounds like a straight head R&B song. KKBT also played Mary Mary's Shackles in 2000 in regular rotation too. IMO Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary and Trintee 5:7 were(and still) using more of the pop sound and that's why KKBT played their music back in the day. Donnie McClurkin's hits We Fall Down(2001) and The Prayer(2003) were played in regular rotation on KJLH and not just their gospel programing back when KJLH actually Urban AC. Kirk Franklin's music has that effect that makes you want to dance. Another Example is Smokie Norful's I Need You Now(2002). The Smokie Norful record
was saxophone laced and KJLH played it in regular rotation. Those I've mentioned were all crossover hits.

Mary Mary's "God In Me" was big on Urban radio too. I even remember HOT 107.9 here in da A playing it. Im sure JOY 92.5 could take listenters from Clear Channel's V101.5, but if they aren't promoting the station it'll be in the bottom of ratings.

They're still great gospel/pop songs but L.A. doesn't have a true urban contemporary to focus on them. I remember KDAY playing Mary Mary's God in Me when they were "The Beat" back in 2008-09 and they were big on Kirk Franklin's The Decleration(This is It) back in 2007-08. If KKBT was still around they would play Mary Mary's Survive, Kirk Franklin's I Smile and Trinitee 5:7 Heaven Here My Heart. Mainstream Urban have to have a positive impact on their 18-24 listeners. If you don't listen to the words of urban contemporary gospel hits they actually sound like anything on WHTA Hot 107.9 in ATL, KMEL 106 in San Fransico, WGCI in Chicago, WVEE ATL, WUSL Philly and all the other mainstream urban's playlist. I wasn't surprised when KKBT 92.3 The Beat, which rarely took a break from Hip Hop & R&B was playing Kirk Franklin's Stomp and the song hit #4 on KKBT's playlist.

Another big gospel crossover hit on Urban AC radio was "Open Up My Heart" by Yolanda Adams, which came out around 2000. I remember hearing this song a lot on V101.5 back in 2000 and 2001.

Yeah Yolanda Adams is another great example of gospel crossover artist. I liked her 2001-02 hit called Never Give Up. KJLH played it alot in regular rotation in late 2001 to early 2002. She has a beautiful voice.

Based on the September 2011 PPM data results from Aribitron, WFJO went from a 1.1 rating to a 2.3 rating. I guess Michael Baisden on a gospel station seems to be working. However, I wonder if they are gaining R&B listeners from V101.5 because of the show rather than gospel listeners from AM stations WZAZ and WCGL?

I listen quite a bit and its a really done quite respectfully. If anything i think it will gain more soldiers for christ who otherwise wouldnt get tbe Word. Most secular listeners LOVE Yolanda Adams anyway! I think its fine. Esp when you can chg channel if topic isnt your cup of tea.

Today, I heard from the local midday personality at Joy 92.5, Octavious Davis, that his show is moving from the midday slot (10am to 3pm) to the afternoon slot (3pm to 7pm), which means that the "Michael Baisden Show" is gone from 92.5 and that the station will be a 24-hour gospel station. This is really good news because I was the first one that brought this issue up about Micheal Baisden being on a gospel station. :)
