Michael Ervin and ESPN Radio

This is off of the Dallas Morning News web site:

Michael Irvin will co-host a daily show on ESPN 103.3 FM beginning Jan. 10.

Irvin will work the 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. time slot with Kevin Kiley, who most recently co-hosted a talk show on the ESPN affiliate in Los Angeles.

Seems like an unusual time slot . . . not mornnig or afternoon drive, but overlapping the last hour of Norm and the first two hours of Bob and Dan on KTCK.

Think about that, if Mike was going against the Musers or the psuedo-hardline, he would be throttled. You know, like the rest of the KESN family. At least this way, he may have a chance. I am fairly certain we will all stop by at least once for some giggles.

Better question, since we all know he can't handle a show solo, how long will it be until Mike calls up Deion and Emmitt to offer their dazzling sports acumen? Seriously? I set the over/under 21 days. Any takers? ;D

I will take the OVER as in WAY OVER. Irvin will be great on ESPN.
I like ESPN and The Ticket but this is a major hire for ESPN.
Ticket wanted him also. Big hire for ESPN, cudos.
Just another chink in the armour of Ticket.
No Greggo.
Norm is wearing everyone out. Give Cowherd a try.
Rhyner is wearing me out with his Petty downbeats and no he is missing Greggo.
I am not predicting Ticket like numbers but this is good for ESPN. Who says you cant have 2 good sports stations in the market? We do.

? I doubt if the Ticket wanted Michael Irvin, he is not a Ticket style hire. I do think he'll be decent and we all will flip over to listen at first but Irvin is a one trick horse. He has no diversity and that's the difference between the Ticket and ESPN. All of ESPN's personalities (national and local) have one style, they can't mix it up. That's why they can't get any numbers, cause after a awile listeners get burned out on hearing the same thing over and over again. Michael will get a bump at first cause he's Micheal, but in the end he won't get big numbers.

Haj, hate to burst your bubble, but T2GN is right. Irvin is not a "hire", he is a novelty for the ticket, and it worked. Every time he was on, it was a stop down. Remember when Irvin and Georgie got into a heated debate about his gardener and that dimwitted lawsuit. The fact that Michael called in created more of the novelty action. He was a ratings grab, which is why they have those "shows" in the first place.

Unless you talk smack outside of sports, you aren't in the hallowed halls of KTCK. Heck, it's amazing Larry Brown has made as far as he has, but note, his career began with the Cowboys show. Again, novelty for a niche show.

The day Mike gets tiring is the day he tries "to make it on his own". He will lean on the new guy but try to overshadow him by casting calls to his buddies (e.g. Emmitt, Deion and who knows, maybe Alvin Harper ;D). Trust me, he will be great for the first few months, but no matter how crazed we all are by Rhyner missing Greggo, the Ticket will always be this market's Number 1 sports stopdown by a long shot.

KESN going local all day and dropping their crafty 5a - 12p hosts, who have no clue about Dallas outside of Romo and its location on a map.

No thanks...tried it and hated it. I would rather visit the dentist for some unnecessary procedure that'll leave me eating nothing but blended up solid foods for three straight weeks. He might have his moments but the guy is usually the definition of the word pompous.

Right on... This is another in a long line of hires for 103.3 that proves once again that they care nothing about the long term listener. If you want to win you must build shows with people who want to be radio people, and build real radio shows. Make people feel a part of the show, and make sure they don't want to miss the show. ESPN has never hired on a person as a full-time host that cares about the station. You think Mike is going to make a bunch of appearances for the station? You think Mike is going to spend time trying to think of ways to help the station? NO. Just like Engel didn't, just like Newy didn't... ESPN cared so little about the listener that they rolled out the "anybody want to host" show for 3 months. They can't even fire somebody right. They let Steve Dennis go, then he is on with Galloway, they let Engel go (And make no mistake, she was fired no matter what they said on her last show) Then she is on Galloway. At some point they will hire someone to run that station that has a clue, but until then the Ticket can stay on cruise control because they are the only show in town......
PS: What is the over/under on missed shows by Mike once Football is over? :p

About two a month... namely during those slim months of baseball season, hockey playoffs and tennis, anyone? ;D

Re: Michael Irvin and ESPN Radio

the ticket is playing a promo that they will have a major announcement on 1/10 @ 11am. So are they going to move the softer-hardline to the slot discussed on the bad radio forum? Even a weakened hardline would kill the playmaker. Maybe they could hire Greg Williams to produce the show and get Alfredo Roberts to cohost and they could do live remotes from the Courtyard Inn. That would be funny

It still won't be anywhere near the amount of time Mike Golic/Mike Greenberg/or both miss from their ESPN show.
