PBS ran the original and a new episode of Michael Fienstein's American songbook tonight, what great TV. The new episode has him visiting Hugh Hefners Playboy mansion where he looks at an incredible collection of audio, video and movie clips of jazz, big bands and performers of the great American songbook back to 1920. One of the highlights is Hefners well stocked old Wurlitzer....Michael punches up "Candy" by Johnny Mercer, it dosen't get any better than that.
Then he visits the Hudson, NY home of an old NYC big band radio announcer who played original WJZ acetate recordings.
Michael's homes are filled to the brim with every bit of sheet music and recordings he can save for posterity climbing through dumpsters if necessary to keep any more of these treasures from ending up in landfills. When he is not performing he spends his time transfering the music for storage longevity.
