Michael Graham, 96.9 FM Talk, doesn't know Boston

I've sampled Michael Graham in Jay's old time slot and I can't listen for long. I find his voice and high energy delivery tiring. His style with callers is not the unique experience we heard with Jay Severin.

Michael Graham is here in the Boston studio but he demonstrates that he is not a local guy. Last week he welcomed a caller from a place he called, HAY-VER-HILL. And no one corrected him. Locals know it's pronounced Hay-Vrill (Vrill, not HILL). For me it's not only an irritant but detracts from his credibility as a talk master and is demeaning to us locals. Graham isn't interested in pronouncing the the names of our local towns properly, does he care about us?

At least we aren't getting barraged anymore with posts about Jay's Boston Show often originating from Jay's home on Long island. No matter where his microphone (studio) was, Jay knew our local Boston area and is a unique talent. I miss him in the afternoon.

In our area it's nice to know how to say the names of places like Haverhill, Leominster, Assonet, Gloucester, Peabody, Worcester just to mention a few.

I could understand it (and even laughed) when David Lee Roth on WZLX congratulated a winner from REED-ing Mass (it's spelled Reading and pronounced RED-ing). He was a temporary guest host from out-of-town but Graham is live and local.

Why wouldn't Michael Graham want to sound like he knows the area? Does this bother anyone else?

don't get too worked up, don't think graham's permanent after all

One of the most outstanding things I noticed about Scott Allen Miller over at WRKO is that within a very short time he was not only able to pronounce the names of every oddly pronounced Massachusetts cities and towns but he has an excellent grasp of the local history of the area. You would think that Scotto was a native.

As to "Graham Crackers" he can only be a short-timer. Is he actually doing the show from the Dorchester studio. There never seems to be a connection between any of the other locals - Barnacle and Egan and Braude. They treat him like just another sydie. In fact, I don't think I have heard any of them mention Graham at all.

Can only listen to this guy is very short dozes.

The most I can say is that Michael Graham is the best thing that has happened to Howie Carr. He makes Howie look like he can actually handle the job and that is a major accomplishment.

Bring back Jay Severin,,,, wherever he is.

You can tell when someone isn't originally from the area. I've heard
TV ads where the announcer mangles place names. "Havver-hill"?
"Pibiddy"? (HAY-vrill, PEA-biddy; though down in Memphis the locals
refer to the Hotel Peabody as the PEA-BAW-dee)

High energy delivery isn't bad in my book though sometimes I'm not fond of
those with raspy voices (someone on these boards gives raspy-voiced Rita
Cosby of MSNBC, formerly Fox News, the nickname "Sucrets"...)

By the way supposedly he IS doing shows from the WTKK studios...in the
few times I sampled him, I heard him mention about "flying every weekend"
(as in, he must be doing the show from WTKK during the week then must
fly back to Va. every weekend...or is he???)
Isn't Roth from Swampscott?

Graham may not know the area, but neither did Jay. And no one is worse on the geography of their OWN state that Mumbles Menino, who refers to Newton as the western part of the state. (but that's a whole other discussion)

how well do you fit in from virginia, doing boston, l.a. and other places all in a day? He's not a dummy, he's looking around

Since day one everyone has been picking on this guy. Give him a chance.

I think he's actually doing a pretty good job learning about the area and unlike a lot of other hosts he seems to be doing his homework. It also appears that he's in the process of moving into the area and that shows some commitment on his part.

I also like the fact that he stood up and took the heat in DC. There are not too many talk show host that believe enough in what they say to lose their job over it. He's got guts and that's something that's missing from a lot of people now a days.

don't bank on that

Jay wouldn't even talk about anything going on here. it has more to do with how good a host is in the end. Jay's a tough act to follow, Michael doesn't seem to have gotten comfortable here yet, it looks to little ole me.
