No, this isn't about the tragic news itself. This is an major league airplay question - at least locally.

Outside of maybe Oldies 103 - and they won't go very far beyond the 1969 and 1970 hits - who else will be playing Jackson's hits? That, of course, is a rhetoric question, as we all know that the answer is a big fat doughnut (aka zero). Maybe Barry Scott will play his best known tunes ("Rock With You," "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," "Billie Jean," "Thriller," "The Way You Make Me Feel") on his Lost 45s show, but with so many Partridge Family/Osmonds/Bobby Sherman/Brady Kids tunes, that may not be possible.

As for the other stations, forget it!

Mike FM - they may play everything, but only as long as the music's in the ZLX-type AC/DC-VH-Aero-Zep-Floyd vein (not to mention early classic Nickelback, Linkin Park and 3 Doors Down). Michael Jackson? Forget it - Disco Vinnie ain't coming down for breakfast either!

WROR - no dice - see Mike FM for details (minus the Nickelback and friends part).

Mix 98-5 - no chance tomorrow night, not with their non-stop rock show (i.e. Duran Duran, Huey Lewis, B-52's, INXS, Police, U2, REM, G'N'R, Def Lep, AC/DC, VH, Ozzy, Aero). The way Joe Cortese runs the show, Michael Jackson's music (the type which easily fit in on the late Vinnie Perruzzi's disco show) would stick out like a sore thumb (as if this was ZLX/ROR/Mike).

Kiss 108? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! ZLX will play Michael before Kiss ever will! (Thank you, John Ivey, for nothing!)

Jam'n? Michael wasn't gangsta rap, so it's a no go. If the Sugarhill Gang can't be heard on the rap station, what chance does Michael have?

Magic? They have a "family-friendly" image to portray, just like certain unnamed politicians from both sides!

And that's the way it is (BTW, I told my assistant boss that Uncle Walter would be the third big name, after Ed McMahon and Farrah.) :(

Not that you would ever, based on your crazy posts in the past... but maybe you should turn on a radio! Michael Jackson was on Magic for a few songs, and is currently non stop on Kiss, Jamn, and Mix.

I should also mention that 103.3 is non stop Michael Jackson, and they brought in Zito & Karen Blake. They are playing all of his hits, and that's not too out of the ordinary, as they've been playing some of his 80s songs for quite a while.

OK, I stand corrected - for ONCE! Heard now: PYT on Mix (in the ordinary during the early Strassell days 91-96; out of the ordinary post-96), You Are Not Alone (Jam'n), Remember The Time (Kiss) and Mama's Pearl (Oldies), followed by The Way You Make Me Feel (Mix), PYT (Jam'n), Off The Wall (Kiss) and The Love You Save (Oldies). Where I live, I can't really get the FM-128 stations, while I get Kiss (Pru) easily. ROR, which as expected is too classic rock to play Jackson, instead played classic rockers Bruce Springsteen, Elton John and Bob Seger.

When Brad Delp passed, is was ALL Boston on Oldies, ROR, Mike, ZLX, BCN, Mix and AAF. I'm sorry about Delp's passing a couple of years ago, but Michael Jackson was much bigger than Boston/Delp. If ROR isn't ALL classic rock like many of you claim, then they'd be playing Michael Jackson AND NOT leaving it to CBS and CC.

Just MHO!

WROR is automated, so that's probably why they're not playing anything. The topic of whether Doyle & Devereaux is live came up on here a few weeks ago. I think today proves that it is not.

Top 10 MJ songs IMHO:

1. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough
2. Billie Jean
3. Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)
4. Off The Wall
5. Dancing Machine
6. Rock With You
7. Can You Feel It
8. Working Day And Night
9. P.Y.T.
10. ABC

You are wrong about a few of the stations on your list, and I know that for a fact, NOT your incorrect assumptions. But, this isn't the thread for ripping on you.

RIP Michael Jackson. His actions may have been questionable, but his talent is one of a kind!

Actually, the Boston stations are doing quite well in the MJ tributes. He's on Mix, Kiss, Jamn', Oldies 1033 non stop for hours as of right now...and sporadically on Mike. I'm recording random clips from several stations to record this historic day...RIP Michael!!

P.S. As of 11:32 PM ET the stations are playing:

Jam'n 94.5 - "Rock With You"
Kiss 108 - "The Way You Make Me Feel"
WODS - The Jacksons "Can You Feel It"
Mix - "Smooth Criminal"

P.P.S. LA Station Kiss and NYC's Z100 have normal programming.

jamn 94.5 has brought in Ramiro Pebbles and Mellisa from the morning show for their Tribute to MJ.
Sad that a station can't let the regular live jock on the air do the job, but only bring in the morning show when something "worthy of their time" happens.
Wonder what the guy on the air thought when he was told he was being pushed aside to let the more important people on to do his job for him.

I heard "Kid Maverick" on Jam'n earlier tonight. He's the usual night DJ. Im not sure who Ramiro & Pebbles filled in for.

At 5 pm or so I heard WRKO's TOH news say that Jacko had suffered cardiac arrest and was being rushed to a hospital. A bit later via XM I was listening to some CNN, etc. while in the car and they were trying to give updates on the situation. By Howie's 6 pm hour he was saying that Jackson was reported as being dead by Ch 25 while other stations weren't saying it just yet. By 6:30 or so, WBZ reported that "CBS is saying, according to two reliable sources, that Jackson is dead."

Dan Rea had people like Dean Johnson, Greg Daniels, and J.J. Wright on his show and CBS radio did a special
from 8:10 to 8:30. By 6:30 or so WODS had broken the news and was playing nonstop MJ. WMKK had none of his music since it's all pre-programmed, of course. OK, maybe a tune or two came through but it would have been scheduled... WTKK covered it w/ McPhee, Sliwa, and Hendrie, etc. I think WODS stopped
the all-Jacko by mid or so.

WMKK does play occasional MJ like Thriller and Billie Jean and even the occasional Jackson 5ive tune.

Tying it into one of my other interests, cartoons, Rankin-Bass produced a Jackson 5ive cartoon series.
One Simpsons episode had MJ guesting, un-credited. He worked with cast members on the "Simpsons
Sing the Blues" album, and "Do The Bartman" has the line "If you can do the Bart, you're Bad like
Michael Jackson." Saturday Night Live had a spoof of the molestation charges in a "TV Funhouse"
edition where MJ was attracted to little kids put on a windowsill (the way that people would "put a pie
on the windowsill to cool it off"). It was done in the style of an old Yogi Bear short.

REALLY nice to hear stations breaking format to pay tribute to a fallen star. Especially Kiss 108, where Romeo stayed on the air after his normal slot, took calls, and played Michael Jackson hits alongside songs I've never heard. Kiss 108 hasn't given Michael Jackson ANY airplay since 2001 when MJ attempted a comeback with "You Rock My World". I heard MJ at any given moment on Kiss108, Oldies, and Mix98.5. Even WBZ AM talked about it with Greg Daniels, Fast Freddy, and JJ Wright. Boston radio responded quite spontaneously to this - showing how powerful and relevant radio still can be.

I suspect nationally that newer CHR's won't devote much time to acknowledging Michael Jackston's music, while heritage CHR's that go back to MJ's heyday will.

If Boston radio is going to be wall to wall Jacko for a while, my radio's going to be off for a while. ;D

I think even Deep Tracks on XM is playing some MJ tonight.... ;-)

Kiss, Mix, Jam'n, and Oldies (and Pro FM) are still playing Michael Jackson non-stop. It looks like they gave up after midnight, but resumed at about 6 AM this morning. According to yes.com, it's been going on in Boston more than anywhere else.
