No, this isn't about the tragic news itself. This is an major league airplay question - at least locally.
Outside of maybe Oldies 103 - and they won't go very far beyond the 1969 and 1970 hits - who else will be playing Jackson's hits? That, of course, is a rhetoric question, as we all know that the answer is a big fat doughnut (aka zero). Maybe Barry Scott will play his best known tunes ("Rock With You," "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," "Billie Jean," "Thriller," "The Way You Make Me Feel") on his Lost 45s show, but with so many Partridge Family/Osmonds/Bobby Sherman/Brady Kids tunes, that may not be possible.
As for the other stations, forget it!
Mike FM - they may play everything, but only as long as the music's in the ZLX-type AC/DC-VH-Aero-Zep-Floyd vein (not to mention early classic Nickelback, Linkin Park and 3 Doors Down). Michael Jackson? Forget it - Disco Vinnie ain't coming down for breakfast either!
WROR - no dice - see Mike FM for details (minus the Nickelback and friends part).
Mix 98-5 - no chance tomorrow night, not with their non-stop rock show (i.e. Duran Duran, Huey Lewis, B-52's, INXS, Police, U2, REM, G'N'R, Def Lep, AC/DC, VH, Ozzy, Aero). The way Joe Cortese runs the show, Michael Jackson's music (the type which easily fit in on the late Vinnie Perruzzi's disco show) would stick out like a sore thumb (as if this was ZLX/ROR/Mike).
Kiss 108? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! ZLX will play Michael before Kiss ever will! (Thank you, John Ivey, for nothing!)
Jam'n? Michael wasn't gangsta rap, so it's a no go. If the Sugarhill Gang can't be heard on the rap station, what chance does Michael have?
Magic? They have a "family-friendly" image to portray, just like certain unnamed politicians from both sides!
And that's the way it is (BTW, I told my assistant boss that Uncle Walter would be the third big name, after Ed McMahon and Farrah.)
