Michael Jackson Dies

The much-ballyhooed "comeback" of Michael Jackson would likely never have happened. Even in London, apparently the only place on earth where people still liked him, he still managed to hack people off, by blowing off a "25th anniversary of Thriller" performance by only singing along to a recording of "We Are the World," along with a handful of kids! ::) Even his (or somebody's) math was off! November, 2006, when this performance was held, was actually the 24th anniversary of Thriller's release! ::) I'm surprised that no one ever bothered to check that out, or point it out to him!

And then there was that Hurricane Katrina relief single he never got around to recording! ::)

I just want Paul McCartney to get his own songs back!
 
MTV, MTV Jamz, and BET (as of 2 AM ET) had discontinued normal programming and were airing Michael Jackson videos and tributes. (his "Thriller" video was one of the videos that made MTV popular).

Farrah Fawcett's death earlier in the day is now pretty much back page news, if even still news at all.

I remember in 2005, when all of the networks (ABC, CBS, NBC) interrupted programming to carry the acquital verdict in his child molestation trial (not to mention the day he showed up late in pajamas). Everything he did was a big deal. This will be one of those "where were you when you heard he died" moments, like when Elvis and John Lennon died.

A very sad tragedy...too young.
 
I got Thriller from my first venture into the Columbia House Record Club as part of my 12 tapes for a penny. Everyone owned Thriller. The video of Thriller, directed by John Landis, put MTV on the map as an artistic outlet.

But things change, MJ became a creepy pedo and MTV hasn't shown videos since 1993.

I miss Farrah more.

Thursday's shows were already put to bed with Farrah BEFORE the Michael Jackson story broke (they tape at around 10:00-11:00 am Pacific Time and then gets satellited to the stations by noon with one or two re-feeds), and I'm thinking Mary Hart -- still nursing her broken arm -- is cutting her vacation short to return to the ET studio.

A few tracks are starting to surface into the top 20 on Itunes.
I'm curious with the HUGE hype & requests & stations blowing dust off MJ tunes they don't usually play...would one of his older tunes re-chart on Billboard after his death & start getting airplay on CHR stations again? It sure would be interesting to hear a radio edit version of Thriller(which is currently at #11 on Itunes), getting mixed right in with everything else in the Top 10.
On Itunes now, Man In The Mirror #12, Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough #14, The Way You Make Me Feel #16, Smooth Criminal #19 & Billy Jean #20. Others by him are further down.
Come to think of it MJ has already probably broken another couple records even after his death-
-most songs on the the Itunes Chart by one artist all at once,
AND most songs on Itunes by the same artist all at once, by an artist who is already passed away. :(
 
Yes, despite the oddities of his personal life, MJ was one very talented guy and will be missed. His passing was a shock to me and it saddens me - in spite of it all.

I'm of the generation who grew up with his music, starting with "ABC" when I was a little kid, through the incredible "Off The Wall" LP in HS to the "Thriller" album when I was in college and beyond. When I was in school, he was such a cultural icon that when his cousin Rockwell came out with "Somebody's Watching Me" and when it was learned that Michael could be heard doing background vocals, the thing vaulted to #1. Anything that Michael touched during the 80's was a phenomenal success. He had an incredible musical career.

It's sad that he was so isolated in life, yet seems to be so beloved in death. I hope that he has the opportunity (somehow) to see how many people really loved his music. For my generation, he will go down as our "Elvis." And there are certainly some parallels between them - given their sometimes bizarre personal lives, the isolation, and the fact that each passed too young while on the cusp of a comeback. This is truly a notable passing and we're all witnesses to a cultural phenomenon as a result.

I've heard "Man in the Mirror" sampled on some TV stations/networks' coverage including MSNBC, and even played on oldies stations today, as well. I'd put my money on "Mirror" being reissued, with "Human Nature" a close second.

ABC aired some tired old retreads from the Martin Bashir interview again last night on Nightline! ::)

I often wondered how much (or how little) coverage Mother Teresa's death would have received had she died before the princess? ::) The networks gave Mother Teresa's death more coverage than they otherwise would have, because they were "guilt-tripped" into doing so by the excessive coverage Diana's death received! ::)

Mary broke her arm? What happened? Did she trip over the bodies of all her former co-anchors? ???

I'n sure all infotainment shows have had Farrah tributes ready for quite awhile. Her death was not unexpected, unfortunately. She'd been battling cancer for three years and was very very ill for many months.

They may have even had Ed McMahon tributes all ready to go. And given the news this last week or so, they probably have Walter Cronkite tributes in the pipeline.

Stuff happens in threes. Uncle Walter might just be the first of the next three. :'(

Isn't The Real World entering it's 22nd season or something like that? I guess anything can happen. ::)

By the way, I believe I watched one season of Real World....the 2nd one...the one with Puck and Pedro. :D

It was cool to see MTV go back to it's music roots and play videos. Almost surreal to see MJ videos with the MTV logo in the right corner. I think Fuse was doing the same.

Yeah, I was wondering what happened. I noticed her broken arm a few weeks ago. I'm not a regular ET viewer.

Her voice gave Kramer seizures. Maybe she's getting them too.
