MICHAEL JACKSON

I realize asking if anyone listens to Providence radio at night is like asking who still buys VHS movies but did anyone hear more Michael Jackson than usual. I don't know if was programmed locally but it looks like B101 was all Michael and/or The Jacksons in the 7PM hour then it tapered off, but still more Michael Jackson than usual. Doesn't look like Coast touched him. I don't know about Ralphie on PRO-FM or if Lite did anything. On a regular basis B101 and Lite do play him. What about Fun 107?

How much you wanna bet Paul and Al mock the crap out of him in the morning?

Yes they just covered Michael Jackson,Ed McMahon, and Farrah Fawcett in one bit.It wasn't even funny but more like a bit for the sake of a bit.Middle age men acting like kids works well in the movies but it loses in translation on the radio.Anyone still listening to these two in this day and age knows what to expect.Oh there's their Paul Harvey news intro followed by Kristin Lessard doing news. That makes three stations in the building she's on.Does she wear roller skates at work?

It really DOES come-in-threes, eh?

Ed McMahon, Farrah, and Jacko...all Seventies ICONS.

In McMahon's and Jackson's case, talents appreciated all-the-more in the 80s and 90s.
In Fawcett's case, a wistful reminder of a time that parallels today.
Economy-in-the-dumper, soaring gasoline prices, concerns-about-what's-happening-on-the-other-side-of-the-world.
But her smile lit us up.
SOME station should be playing Tavares' "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel."

A few months back, at R&R's Talk Radio Seminar in California, I got to meet Suzanne Somers, "the other Farrah."
I told her that, in the 70s, before VCRs, I was a night time DJ, so I never got to see "Three's Company" in first-run.
(Ditto "Charlie's Angels," with whom I was also competing-for-attention at night.)
"But I felt your presence," I told her.
"I get that a lot," she smirked. GREAT line.

I got voicemail last night from a pal of mine, who runs a bunch of stations. He was driving from Washington to the Philadelphia area last night, after the Jackson story had broken. He said that, along the radio-rich Mid-Atlantic I-95 corridor, AM/FM handled Jackson's passing LOTS better than satellite radio.

PS: TOUGH comeback start for John Smoltz, who STILL got a standing-O @ the Saux-at-Nats game last night. Although Sox fans WAY-outnumbered Nationals fans, the welcome seemed, as they say in Washington, "by unanimous consent." He struck out the first batter, then, as one writer put it, "nerves and adrenaline and rust" got to him. By the time he settled down, he looked like Smoltzy again. 62 of 92 pitches were strikes. New Nats stadium is NICE, but can't handle a sell-out crowd. Ditto Metro, which was a nightmare. Now, back to The Block...

PRO didn't seem to do anything at all, not even in the 6 PM hour, when I thought they were live. Maybe he VTs the last hour of his show? Sounds like they're making up for it this morning.

Fun was playing quite a bit.

The Tom Kent show on B101 that starts at 7 is live, so that accounts for them playing the songs then, obviously nothing before that.

Radio seems to be remembering Farrah...

Someone at a station I work with Emails: "I went to get 'Charlie's Angels' sound this morning, and this is what I found on two sites:

Bandwidth Limit Exceeded: The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to the site owner reaching his/her bandwidth limit. Please try again later. "

Now I know why this group has no problem with a convicted felon ( Spanky Cianci) being on WPRO and going after law enforcement on a daily basis.

Jackson was charged with child rape and kidnapping. He was found not guilty.

However in 2 other cases Jackson paid upwards of 20 million dollars in settlements to prevent criminal
charges on him for sexual abuse of a minor.

indeed according to radio peoples standards Jackson was a Hero, right?

You all have a nice day.

I wouldn't say he was a hero. I would say that he had major influence in the musical world. That is why we are posting about him on a RADIO BOARD. Some of you are choosing to focus on his personal life. As if you have a personal beef with Michael Jackson. I don't know what that's all about. The guy is gone. At least pay a little respect. The only thing lower than knocking a guy who is down is knocking a guy who is DEAD. Quit it already.

I was listening to Matt Allen last night and I simply loved what he said about Michael Jackson!!
Jacksons 'Privilege-money' gave him a license to have his way with kids- sexually. Money gave Michael Jackson the privilege of not going to jail.
Michael Jackson invaded innocent kids lives. I can't have any respect for him. He committed acts of abomination against the
little ones. Sky, I love your posts , but this is the first time I have to respectfully disagree with you .. Everytime his music would come on air,
I'd switch the station. I could never get past what he was and what he did and what he got away with! respectfully, Alfieradioguy

I guess I only have a problem with people bashing the guy because this is all so new. I'm still in shock. He only died 18 hours ago. The body isn't even cold yet. I just think the jokes are to soon. But whatever... I'm all for freedom of speech. I don't hate anyone for their opinion. I just think people could at least wait until tomorrow. Maybe focus on the good today. His incredible music and how many fans he made happy. To soon to bash in my opinion... but whatever. Peace out peeps.

Radio has never been known to make value judgements that last too long when it comes to artists that do questionable things. Is Chris Brown still barred from airplay at certain stations? What about The Dixie Chicks on some country stations? Great White on HJY may be an exception.

M.J. sure wasnt Black. He dyed his skin. Says that he slept in a oxogen camber and I heard his nose fell off from too much operations. that an all about the lusting for the children, yea maybe he not even a real human? Maybe the dude just hybernates every 50 yrs.
Chill everyone! give M.J. about 1 week hes just regenerating! ;)

Channel 12 was going to run a feature on how local radio reacted to this on the 6o'clock news but I didn't stick around long enough to watch it. I assume PRO-FM would have been the station spotlit unless someone at a Clear Channel actually had the nerve to comment on how they responded. I also have to laugh at the headlines here about how radio reacted to Michael's death. Let's face it. No one relied on radio to react to anything. Everybody heard about it online and that's where everyone is getting their fill of MJ. Back to regularly scheduled programming. Radio is after the fact and just trying to show they're still involved in something.

Paul and Al were excited they got to whip out more old lame bits; they even got to sleep in more than usual. Nothing like hearing Al's voice sounding like Al's voice pretending to be someone else. They could at least use karaoke music so you can't hear the original lyrics.

Matty handled it well. Even though I'm not a fan of the music; it's nice to have a real morning show in Providence now.

The funniest thing about Paul and Al is that they're paid so much to do what they do. Granted they've worked for it but they haven't evolved and are playing to the knuckle draggers and double chinned donut waitresses now. I think they're just biding their time. I didn't listen to hear what kind of bit they did about Jackson but I'm sure it was just obvious humor. Still this death wasn't something anyone foresaw so they had little time to prepare. I'm sure they've already prerecorded Patrick Swayze port mortem bits. If they ever lose this job it's New Hampshire or bust.

It's really time for new blood at HJY. Bring in someone new and fresh. So many stations out there settle for mediocre ratings instead of doing something creative to break ratings records. The world has turned lazy. Radio has lost it's drive. This is why people are tuning out. Put someone good on the air and people will come back in droves.
