If Michael Kay is the voice of the Yankees on TV, why does he not do most road games? Ken Singleton is again to play-by-play on the current road trip. Also, is there
a good reason why his radio show goes to 7pm when his television broadcasts begin at that time? Does ESPN 1050 need his name more than his content to compete
with WFAN? Please enlighten me.

What are you talking about? Kay did his radio show live from Tampa, or one of the cities the Yankees played on the road against earlier this month... He does several road trips with YES every year. YES is probably lenient with Kay in letting him stay home some series, because he also does a talk show every day. He probably "pays back the time" through his "CenterStage" interview program.

In the 6 PM hour, 1050 segues into an hour titled "New York Baseball Tonight," usually with Don LaGreca hosting. Despite its title and time, it is considered part of "The Michael Kay Show."
 
I remember Kay doing select pre-season games from Tampa, but those are hardly "road" games. While I realize that he does games from Boston and Baltimore, when is the last
time he called a west coast trip? When is the last time he called an away game from Arlington, Tx. or Kansas City or Minnesota? Michael Kay is not Vin Scully or Ernie Harwell.
He is in the prime of his career. It seems odd that he is not doing the full Yankees television schedule.
Regarding the radio show, the "New York Baseball Hour" is incorporated into his show, yet he obviously has to prepare for his 7pm YES broadcasts. I thought perhaps
management sought to attach his name to the product to lend name recognition to the station as they do lag behind WFAN in the ratings.
I ask as a fan of the man and his work.
 
Honestly, I'd rather hear Ken Singleton (but not Flaherty) over Kay any day, but I come from the generation of Rizzuto, White and Messer.

Don't forget, earlier this month, WEPN actually cut off an hour of his show (it had started at 2 PM in recent months) to make way for a new two-hour show from 1-3 PM with Jody MacDonald. So it technically means even less of Kay than ever.

If I had my way, they'd both be teamed up again on the radio side and I'd only listen to them when Joe Buck is going the game on the TV side.
 
Yes announcers alternate home and away. Michael Kay does his radio show everyday but leaves at 6 PM if he has a game at 7 PM.
 
Ken Singleton and John Flaherty are the best Yankee TV announcers. You can have Kay. I don't like the man and never have. He's in love with himself, thinks the broadcast is all about him and he butchers the English language. I don't know if he dumbs himself down because he thinks his audience is stupid, or if he's just plain stupid. Anyway, he's the worst announcer the Yankees ever had, bar none.

I am still puzzled. How many jobs are as prestigious as being the television voice of the New York Yankees? And this guy is doing his radio show live from
Mo's Grille while the Yankees are playing the A's? Does Kay prefer the radio show to the Yankees gig? Is he afraid to fly like John Madden? Or does YES treat him
like Vin Scully and limit him to home and east coast games?
Perhaps, the Yankees should market the Casey Stengal throwback jersey. Over the number 37, they could replace "Stengal" with "Arbitron" in honor of Kay's ratings
success.
 
Kay's schedule on radio has nothing to do with his YES Network schedule. He (and I guess the other YES announcers) are given control of their own schedules.

If one has noticed over the years, Kay doesn't go to the West Coast very often, nor does he do road games in Detroit, Texas, or Kansas City (he's said on radio that Texas gets too hot for him in the summer, and Detroit and K.C. are boring), so he keeps that pretty consistent. I'd say he does at least 100 games a year.

Okay, so suppose Ken Singleton and Paul O'Neill decide that doing Yankee games from Kansas City or Detroit are boring - would they get to skip them, too? They are, as you say, all "given control of their own schedules."

I think Kay gets the first crack, since he is the ** lead ** announcer. Singleton takes the lead when Kay is off. When they work together, Kay does most (or all) of the PBP. The analysts' schedules must be more flexible.
 
When Key is there, only he does PBP no matter who else is in the booth with him. When Singleton is there and Kay isn't, the only other guy that does PBP is Flaherty and he's HORRIBLE!
 
I can't remember a pair of broadcasters in such high-profile positions who get as much criticism as Michael Kay and John Sterling. Who is considered the worse broadcaster or the
most annoying amongst New Yorkers and why?
 
Perhaps it's the fact that their jobs are so high profile that they are always under scrutiny all the time. Last time I checked, every sports play-by-play broadcaster doesn't necessarily have to be Vin Scully.
