Michael Savage To Xtra Sports 860

WorldNet Daily reports that Ken Dennis has signed Michael Savage to KTRB (Xtra Sports 860), beginning February 2:

http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=123078

KNEW's move to make Savage a "free agent" was a "classic fumble near the goal line," said Ken Dennis, managing partner of KTRB, known as XTRA sports 860.

Like Savage or not, this was a good move by KTRB -possibly their first. As for having a conservative talk host on a sports station...I guess the precedent would be all those years Rush spent on KNBR.

Agreed...KNBR did really well with Rush so this could finally put KTRB on the map and when they move their stick it would be a monster signal

So will we get to hear Savage get cut off in the middle of a rant when the A's games start? Like used to happen with Rush and the Giants? Could be some of the best entertainment on radio.

Ever since Savage has been on KSTE, that must be a so-so signal at night in SF and Oakland.
About time he's back on a decent signal in his home market!

KTRB 860 used to have a talk show format. They carried Jerry Doyle and Glenn Beck.

With Savage as their latest addition, I'm happy. Like another poster said, I've tried listening on KSTE when on Bay Area endeavors, yet it's been spotty, esp. the last hour. I've gotten to know other CA stations through streaming (e.g., KERN in Bakersfield) to hear the Savage Nation better, yet it's great to readily have a strong signal on the AM.

And Savage is also on KTRB's Modesto sister station, KMPH-840.

Unless I missed it, the article didn't specify what time he'd be on- though the afternoon is a logical assumption. That's too bad, I like Chris Myers in the afternoon.

I listen to sports radio specifically to get away from politics, but now I have no escape...

Since the local station has to take the network feed (there is no other), it will be at the same time he's been on. They feed 3-6pm, with the first hour refed from 6-7p.

BigJournalism.com says:

>>Starting Feb. 1, Michael Savage, host of The Savage Nation, returns to the air waves in the Bay Area on XTRA Sports 860 AM in San Francisco from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Suppose the A's are in NY or Boston. That means a 4 pm (maybe 4:30, NY?) PT start. Prob have a pregame show too. Or Chicago? OK, two hour difference so the game begins at 5 or 5:30 (actually 5:11 as CWS
first pitches are at 7:11, tie in with Seven 11)

For a 50kw AM at 860, KTRB's signal should/could be better...Not nearly as strong as KNBR's, KCBS's or KGO's. Anyone know why that is??

But it seems to cover the main population clusters in the Bay!

They'll get a ratings boost from this for sure!

I've gotta assume there'll be a late-nite replay during baseball season -- between the situations you described and the local home day games, he'll be pre-empted fairly often. Will Savage Nation sit still for an hour of Robert Buan when a day game ends at 3:30?

Their transmitter is near Sunol, far away from the SF Bay and the good ground conductivity that comes with salt water. So the signal suffers. However, they have a CP to diplex with either KFAX or KTCT - I can't remember which - during the daytime. So the transmitter during the day will be in Hayward, and coverage should be excellent. Nighttime it'll still be from the Sunol site.

The KTRB daytime signal will come from Hayward, diplexed with KFAX (off Winton).

I am 3000 miles from the Bay Area, so I can't listen to the signal, but I gather from this thread that KTRB has not yet built its new daytime facilities (diplexed into--I believe--KFAX's southeast tower). But the CP was granted quite a few months ago and since no tower construction is involved, it's a bit surprising that KTRB apparently hasn't yet been testing its new daytime signal. There are several possible explanations, however: 1) no money available for the construction (even with no new towers required, the cost will not be trivial), 2) in better economic times, the manufacturers of the required custom-designed filtering networks (Kintronics and others) had notoriously long lead times. I had heard that the recession had caused those lead times to shorten noticeably, but several months still wouldn't be unreasonable, I guess. I assume that, like most major-league baseball teams, the As play the majority of their home games at night. If that is the case, the broadcasts of most As games will emanate from the night sticks, from which KTRB currently operates full-time. In the winter, the same will be true of ~2/3 of Savage's program. For most of the year, though, Savage will be on from the day site, which should provide much better reception to nearly all of your market's population.
