It often seems that Dr. Savage may only be there during the first 2 hours. The interviews and segments with others that pop up in the third hour seem canned to me. For example, on 11/10/09 he introduced a guy on the phone who went on at length about a new ABC-TV show that has a conservative bend. It seemed like the guy's monolouge may have been pre-recorded and Savage added himself later as Savage would only say little generic things like, "Oh, that's interesting", and "I'm with you there".
Then after this was done, apparently there was some time to kill, so Savage took a call... or they dubbed a previous call in to fill the time. After the call was done, Savage said his "I'll be right back", but the timbre of his voice was different, making it sound like an edited piece.
Then he had a guy on who had better presence then a phoner, but it seemed pretty obvious that the guest was in an entirely different studio as the room dynamics and miking were strikingly different, with Savage having better microphone presence. It too felt like pre-recorded as the guest did the bulk of the talking, although Savage chimed in with some specifics. It seemed pre-recorded due to its generic nature.
