Michael Selden airchecks

A lot of people on this board are so young that they have never heard of Michael Selden.

Selden was the Afternoon Drive DJ at 1190 KLIF at the time when 75% of the teenagers in Dallas were listening.

He then did afternoon drive at KVIL-FM for several years until he was fired by Ron Chapman.

After that, it was a year or two doing afternoon drive at KNUS. Then he was with KPLX and KLIF, which had gone Country by this time.

I have about 45 minutes of classic Selden airchecks streaming this week on my streaming Internet "radio station" at:

http://www.live365.com/stations/spymovie7

When the page loads, just click on that yellow play button, and you can listen to telescoped Selden airchecks.

There's also a 2 1/2 minute aircheck of myself from K104, which I've included simply so you can see how much I was influenced by him.

Your humble servant,

Joe King from The Rock & Roll Zoo
(The Only DJ in Zoo History to DJ for Just One Day!)

That's still a point of conjecture...even Ron has said that Ron gave Mike the choice of 'getting with the program' or leaving. Mike was always breaking format and not behaving as Ron (the PD at that point as well) wanted him to. Selden's afternoon ratings were frequently beating Ron's morning show, which miffed Ron to no end...but upper management wasn't about to touch a thing even when Ron complained. After one sour book in the Winter 77/78 period, where KVIL dropped inexplicably from a 9.6 to a 6.9, Chapman now had the evidence in writing to approach management with, to get Selden out of there.

So on or about March 18, 1978, Chapman and Selden had a final blowup, with Chapman having the support of management this time to make a binding decision. One version of the story has an all-out blowup that nearly escalated into a fist-fight, with a station engineer having to separate the two; another has Selden pretending to pitch a ball at Ron, saying to Ron that 'the ball's in your court now,' and another version has Mike telling Ron that he'll think about things over the weekend, discuss with his wife, etc and give him an answer thereafter. Whatever happened, Selden quit on his own without altercation, and went directly to KNUS (who had just hired Brother Jon Rivers for afternoons, and reneged on that deal to bring Selden over.)

This all came from a source close to the situation then, who happens to frequent this board...corrections or clarifications are welcome.

I remember Mike Selden very well. He was a great DJ, and funny. At least funny for a teenager. I remember when he and Ron participated in the Great Race back in 1974. I would listen to Selden every day after school. It was sad to hear that he had passed away several years ago.

Thanks for the great memories of KVIL!
