Michael Spears: Update

Michael's situation is deteriorating, and he has now been moved to an appropriate care facility. He's fighting as hard as he can, and if anyone has the will and faith to beat what he's up against, I believe he's the guy.

I know he's not crazy about a lot of people being privy to his status, but his many friends would probably like to know. Too many people care not to say something. He can recieve brief calls and visitors, but his stamina is now a limitation.

Please keep him in your most urgent thoughts and prayers.

I'm sure many people are praying for Michael's recovery. May it happen and may his health be restored. I'm sorry I never took the time to call or e-mail Michael. We were in the same area at the same time many years ago. Sometimes, unfortunately, it takes a catastrophic illness to put things in perspective and show us what's really important.

Please keep us informed of his condition. I was in a couple of classes with him at SMU, way back when... At the time, his alter ego Hal Martin was on KLIF. I guess that dates me.

Although we never kept up with each other as our lives went different directions, I always considered him to be a friend. I'll be thinking about him.

From a close friend of Michael's:

He was able to rest some yesterday and was in better spirits this morning, even joking with the nurses. When transporting him to radiation one nurse was concerned that he wasn’t properly placed on the gurney. She told the other nurse they needed to reposition him because he was tall. To which Michael replied “I’m also handsome”. Typical Michael!!!

I remember in the early years when I first met him he once said “I can’t wait until tomorrow” to which I responded “why?”

“Because I get better looking every day” was his answer. He tried that joke on me for years but I at least would give the answer before he could…

Michael was expecting to be moved to a hospice today.

I had heard a while back that Michael was sick, but I thought he was doing better. I had no idea...Jody, keep us posted on his condition.
