Michael Strahan to leave 'Live' for full-time 'GMA' spot

Michael Strahan had better set his alarm a bit earlier: the legendary former New York Giants defensive end is leaving “Live” and Kelly Ripa after four years for fellow ABC series “Good Morning America,” where he’s been a special correspondent.

Strahan, still an NFL analyst for Fox Sports, will begin his new co-anchor position in September. In his previous “GMA” role, Strahan would join the desk twice per week — now it’ll be a full-time gig.

“Over the past two years on ‘GMA,’ Michael’s proven to be a tireless and versatile broadcaster with an incredible ability to connect with people, from veterans and all kinds of newsmakers to a host of modern American cultural icons,” said James Goldston, president, ABC News. “He is a great modern thinker and leader, and with our brilliant team in front of and behind the cameras, he will help us drive forward into a very exciting future.”

while he's being promoted to full time GMA anchor, i bet you money sooner or later, he leave's Fox Sports since this is pretty much a time consuming and conflict of interst issue since he works for ABC during the week. and Disney co-owns ESPN and i bet they aren't happy that Strahan is working both their sister network and one of their biggest Rivals Fox Sports. i think sooner or Later, he will do his Sunday NFL related duties on ESPN.

How Kelly Ripa Could Pay the Price for a Diva Act

When will Kelly Ripa come back? The future of ABC’s mornings may depend on the answer.

Ripa was an unexpected no-show Wednesday on “Live With Kelly and Michael,” following cohost Michael Strahan‘s announcement that he would exit in September to join ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

ABC then issued a posterior-covering statement later in the day that Ripa would actually be absent til Tuesday due to “previously scheduled vacation.”

It seems unlikely that Ripa – whose spokesperson did not return several email and phone messages from TheWrap – was so distraught by Strahan’s impending departure that she simply could not bear to do any work. The pair are said to have had a tense relationship in recent days. Strahan paid tribute to Ripa during “Live” on Wednesday, but Ripa herself remained silent, issuing no statements through her rep or via Twitter.

More probable is that Ripa is having a diva-like fit of pique because, insiders say, she was kept out of the loop as network bosses negotiated Strahan’s transfer to “GMA.” (Certainly the possibility of Strahan’s switch must have occurred to her, however, given the former NFL star’s frequent “GMA” appearances lately.)

Whether Ripa is suffering a wounded ego or her absence is part of a larger negotiating ploy, she may want to think twice before extending her time off from “Live,” where she reportedly earns a $20 million paycheck.

If Live doesn't come back next season, what would take its place? A third hour of GMA?

BTW, these articles keep saying Live is an ABC show. It's produced by ABC, but it airs in syndication.

Disney/ABC Domestic Television (which swallowed up Buena Vista, who used to distribute the show) only distributes it. Production is handled by ABC O&O WABC. Live! has its roots in A.M. New York, which was a clone of KABC's A.M. Los Angeles.

Strahan will be staying with Fox NFL Sunday, despite his work with ABC.

This was a surprise. Hopefully Michael enjoys his full run at Good Morning America.
The question is: what happens with the second seat on Live? Rotating hosts or are they getting another permanent host by September? This will be the third time this has happened - Regis had rotating female hosts for months after Kathie's departure, until Kelly Ripa took over in 2000 - the opposite happened in 2011 w/ Kelly and rotating guest hosts.
Did you also hear about Kelly's breakdown? She called in sick, "in protest" of Michael's departure. He blindsided Kelly and this made her extremely upset. Kelly is not expected to come back to Live at least through next week, although some sources are saying the rest of the season is toast for her. With a 10% drop, could cancellation be on the way after 28 years in national syndication? We shall find out. I'm sure ABC wants a 9AM GMA hour really bad to compete with Today on NBC. On the West Coast it would lead right into The View.
If Live will go on into 16-17, I predict the new male host will either be Jerry Seinfeld or Josh Groban.

Live is on at least through 2020.

They'll find another host. Strahan and Ripa had good chemistry, but this is just a better opportunity for him.

There was a story on Yahoo about this & Ripa who they say has expensive spending sprees and is not likely to give up her big Live check anytime soon. I find that funny.

How many people left the show after Regis was kicked out. With Strahan now gone I don't see Kelly being able to pilot the ship herself. She is too bubbly.

And her dramatic exit going into vacation was probably calculated to garner attention. But, yeah, the franchise is under contract, and a new host (or hosts), will be likely. This show is currently seen in almost all the top20 markets and is a morning staple.

Absolutely. In Seattle, it's been on KOMO-4 at 9AM since late 1989. It was on KSTW-11 for the first part of 1988-1989, then disappeared in the second half (KVOS did have it, IIRC). Other stations have had Live since the first episode at the same time, usually 9AM.
Again, Josh Groban or Jerry Seinfeld are two good candidates to replace Michael. They are entertainers, Jerry would be a laughfest and Josh would be entertaining to watch. Josh was also a candidate for replacing Regis in 2011 until Michael took the job.
Kelly is still absent.

I don't watch Live regularly because of the time it comes on, but I'd rather see them stay on than to end up with more garbage like Jerry Springer and Maury.

Yes - I hear Jerry Seinfeld is down to his last billion dollars, so he's willing to make the heavy commitment to doing a frothy daily chat show.

Kelly is the primary draw for the show. She and Strahan had the on screen chemistry that worked well, but the next co-host will be someone who compliments Kelly.

I don't think the show is going anywhere. It works and is profitable.

Why did you refer to one of the hosts for the program by only her first name and the other one by only his last name?

Because, Mr. Mario500 - he's clearly a sexist pig and disrespects women. Or maybe, just maybe- it was unintentional and you should stop quibbling about what you perceive to be slights or incorrect usages.

Do you really think calling a public female figure by her first name is disrespectful? In the old days and especially in the entertainment industry there were a bunch of divas who insisted on being called by their full stage name (or with the proper identifier). Today it seems like that has gone by the wayside and nobody seems to mind being called by their first name. (Note that even Hillary Clinton has the icon of her campaign as her first initial and Bernie Sanders actually uses his full first name.) Now if a young person was addressing a senior person it might be considered impolite or bad manners but I don't think it would be considered disrespectful.
