That suggests those people (with PPMs) are somehow not "real listeners," which is neither logical nor fair.
Given the reality of broadcast radio, some kind of sample is the only way it's going to be sold to advertisers. There is no "perfect" viable solution, but let's be honest, PPMs are a major upgrade from diaries in terms of accuracy. And as much as people want to throw "they didn't ask me" out there, it doesn't negate the statistical reliability of a well constructed sample (and why anecdotal experiences, while perhaps interesting, are nonetheless irrelevant). Money to pay the bills isn't going to magically appear unless you can demonstrate you're drawing an audience.
