Mickey (of Mickey & Sylvia) Has Died

Cleve Duncan of the Penguins died...then Earl Carroll of the Cadillacs...and now Mickey Baker of Mickey & Sylvia. November has been a sad month for those of us who love the music of the '50s. At least we still have their recordings.

Among the songs that Mickey played guitar on:

Jim Dandy - LaVern Baker
Tweedle Dee - LaVern Baker
Smokey Joe’s Cafe - Robins
Shake Rattle & Roll - Joe Turner
and of course Love Is Strange - Mickey & Sylvia

Not too shabby!

Rest in Peace Mickey....Just love that song, "Love Is Strange" from 1957.

I wonder what they thought about Pitbull's "Back In Time" (which has a repeated sample throughout the song).

was "Love is Strange" re-released in the mid 60's ?? for some reason I didn't think it was a a fifties song ??

Peaches & Herb had a Top 20 hit with it in 1967.

Paul McCartney & Wings also covered it in 1971. I remember it getting quite a bit of airplay in Indianapolis, but I don't think they ever released it as a single.

It was first recorded (but not released) by Bo Diddley in May 1956, a few months before Mickey & Sylvia had their hit.

deltas69---and be sure to say hello to your father, deltas68---In 1965 the Everly Brothers managed to get to #128 on the Bubbling Under chart with a version of Love Is Strange. The song was obviously not meant to be a duet by two men. There were four other 1960s versions of Love Is Strange: Chubby Checker & DeeDee Sharp, Betty Everett & Jerry Butler, Dale & Grace, and Caesar & Cleo (who would become better known as Sonny & Cher). In 1957 Buddy Holly recorded a cover version but it wasn't released until long after his death. There was also a version by Luther & Little Eva (King #5010, for you record collectors). Donnie Elbert recorded the song in 1974. A version by Buck Owens and Susan Raye got to #20 on the country chart in summer of 1975, and country singer K.T. Oslin recorded it in 1990. Whew!

Here is a 1966 clip of Mickey Baker sitting atop a piano and playing a guitar while a few people dance. Unfortunately the cameraman spends most of his time showing the dancers instead of Mickey. And did we really dance that way in the '60s? Yikes!

RIP Mickey Baker...from another Louisvillian! Everytime I play "Shake, Rattle and Roll" I listen for you filling behind Sam "The Man" Taylor's sax break.
