Micro FM 96.1 - Radio Whitfield

Yesterday afternoon, I heard Grant Hudson (Formerly of Clear Channel - Sarasota) doing local weather on 96.1- " Radio Whitfield" ...obviously from the county line area around SRQ airport... ANYONE have any info on this.??. Tried searching on line, but nothing found.. the music mix was pretty good for the short time I heard it... also running PSA's ...
Thanks for any info...

I thought Grant left the area when his CKLW buddy, Big Jim left for Melbourne or Vero Beach. I know he lived generally in that area. That would be cool if he's running a pirate station. I didnt see him at the Detroit radio reunion this year but Big Jim was there. There is a CKLW 20/20 news aircheck of Grant floating around the internet where he describes a guy that had been out all nite using a genuine Louisville slugger bat to bat 1000 on her head when he came home and she gives him a lot of grief. Maybe Grant has retired in this area.

No joy Googling, either, however changing my parameters I see that there is a neighborhood called Whitfield Estates, located just north of SRQ runways. See:

http://www.michaelsaunders.com/neighborhoods/whitfield-estates/

So, it would make sense that it's coming from this neighborhood based on your signal level in the area.

Coincidentally, I'll be in the area (or passing through, at least) this Saturday. I'll make it a point to try to hear and even DF it if possible.

And if heard, it will of course earn an entry into my Florida Low Power Radio Stations page at:

http://sites.google.com/site/floridadxn/florida-low-power-radio-stations

A Whois search of granthudson.com comes back to a PO Box in Tallevast FL which is at the NE corner of the SRQ airport. So, Grant must be somewhere in the area. Would love to talk to him.

Saturday follow-up results, as promised:

A pretty big signal on University Parkway, peaking between Lockwood Ridge Road and US-301. Uh... not Pt. 15. Would venture to guess 25-50 watts based on previous experi... uh, I mean my guess. Not sure why one would risk a visit from Ralph T. Barlow's antennae-wielding thugs, gun-toting FDLE misfits or the local Barney Fife, with a format that I can hear on multiple licensed FM's. Didn't have time to DF to the specific address.

I give him credit for the frequency choice: a doughnut hole, as outside of the signal range -- even north -- one gets "K-Rock" (WRXK-FM, Bonita Springs). Signal completely lost by downtown Bradenton. No trace of him at I-75/University exit, but pieces began appearing a couple of mile If someone knows or contacts him, let him know he should cut the power back. Love hearing pirates and hate to see one taken out.

Druid Hills Radio says: "He should cut the power back a lot. Even 1 watt will cover his neighborhood though it would still exceed Part 15 limits. He is asking for trouble."

But then, Druid Hills Radio could be wrong.

It sounds as though he is running through exciter power. He must be an old AMer, it is a highly compressed signal - without the pumping and breathing.

When and where you can pick it up, format sounds better than most on the air... too bad there's no web page and or streaming... Come on Grant... fill us in ... Inquiring minds want to know...

Also must be north and a bit east of actual Whitfield area, as on US 41 signal barely heard @ SRQ, but MUCH better off 15 St E and or US 301..

Wish I could put a micro FM or even AM on.... but would probably cost too much... Oh well...
And so it goes...

Druid Hills Radio says, "Not really."

But then again, Druid Hills Radio could be wrong.

I've been able to chase and triangulate easier and stronger stations, before. But this isn't the only "pirate" around.

103.1 has a stronger signal around the same area. There is an allocation for that one but in Palmetto.

Grant may have an application that is just not showing up for public viewing, yet.

The calls he's using are WWTF. I would hate to think that he is making this whole thing up.

The next time I hear the 888 number, I'll call it and see if it even exists.

This is not making sense at this point.

Today I couldn't hear anything out of 96.1... K-rock came booming in around SR 70 and 15 Street East in Oneco... Used to get 96.1 pretty good there...

Shut down, voluntary or otherwise, or just down to legal power, which means I'd have to drive a bit south to p/u... Never did get that toll free # or find out if they're streaming...

Did find some fault with programming after listening for a while... 2 Bab's Streisand's in a row is 2 too many.. 5-6 do-woop or similar sounding 50's songs again too much in a row...

And so it goes...

badjef - I won't be down there until next month (piggiefest at the Manatee Convention Center). Hopefully 103.1 will still be on. I missed that one. And yes flwfg, 96.1 (was?) better a little NE of the airport.

I haven't checked for awhile, but this Pt. 15 AM is probably still active. It runs a loop at least as a default when nothing is happening otherwise.

1610 (LPR) "Rowlett Radio" William Monroe Rowlett Elementary School, Bradenton. Greater details are on my web page.

Manatee High is on 90.9... Electa Lee middle School is also on 1610... The School board rep wasn't too free with info a couple of years ago when I brought to their attention that they were WAY over powered @ Manatee...

Still nothing on 96.1

1st wknd. in Dec.. Manatee Civic Ctr... Same time (Sat ) as an antique radio show (AWA) @ the Knights of Columbus on Fruitville Road in Sarasota...

piggiefest ? :)

73, me

Nothin' better than a good "piggyfest"

TerryKay: Let me know, We'll "pig out" together

flwfg: thanks for two more micro-radio additions for my page.

badjef: drifting off-topic on the board but I usually show up mid-morning at the piggiefest, squawking loud noises on FRS 1 or 14 at full power prior to entering. Happy to meet up with any on this board. The Manatee PigSnotFest is 2nd in size/quality only to the Orlando show, which is a must for me, too. The upcoming one is:

HamCation 2011
February 11, 12, 13
Central Florida Fairgrounds
4603 West Colonial Drive
Orlando, Florida 32808

IT'S BACK !!!!!

Heard Radio Whitfield on 96.1 again today...signal sounds pretty much as before..... maybe downgraded just a bit....
