Micro FM 96.1 - Radio Whitfield

FCC must have made a visit recently... Unable to hear at all for past week or so... K-Rock now comes in quite clear most of the time...Oh well... Was kinda nice while it lasted...

I dont think the FCC or MCSO has been involved in this matter. There have been no reports in the Sheriff log, plus, something like that would have made the mullet wrapper (Bradenton Herald). I agree, I liked their music choices. They were a little over modulated though. Set up with a decent processor, an Inovonics or older 8100 Optimod would sure make it sound better

Yeah, you're probably correct... Mullet Wrapper would have gone to town on that one... And MSO also ... Agreed too about the over mod. But it was just a hobby for someone,,, When I worked part time for almost 30 years here, I used to say that radio was a part time job that didn't cost me too much ...

Back on the last couple of days.

It is "Pirate Season", again.

96.3 is also around Whitfield. It may be the same one chased from 103.1.

Too bad they don't stream also.....

96.1 is back on. It is how I found 96.3.

96.3 was bleeding downstream.
96.3 sounds as if it is a stronger station.

The battle of the pirates, I guess.

There are "open" freq's in Whitfield. Why they would think the need to interfere with each other seems kooky.

...but they are pirates...

What do they play?

Since I'm not sure which station you are asking, 96.3 is a Carribean type. 96.1 calls itself "Radio Whitfield" with the calls of WWTF and plays a mix of "Music of a Lifetime" 50's up. Even has an 800 number for requests.

Was at the Ramada on 41 and noticed no 96.1 this morning but 96.3 is there, 96.3 covers a lot more ground than 96.1 ever did. Was going to do some DF'g but my IFR is on the fritz!?!? Oh well

Happy Radio Weekend.

I just use a radio, off-freq. with no antenna when I get close. Then triangulate.

A proven method for over 40 years!

You call it "DF'g" - I call it "antennna chasing."

It's more fun than going directly to the source.

Similar for me, badjef. I use the car radio and drive a closing grid, sometimes taking a rough signal bearing or two with a RadioShack Pro-60 handheld scanner (it has the FM BCB) in open parking lots. The Pro-60 is held up to the windshield or out the window and when I'm within a block or two, I disconnect the Pro-60 whip for a whisper of audio. You're within a block at that point. I recently added an MFJ-888 frequency counter to the arsenal for very close proximity exact readings. In a perfect world, I have someone with me to help scan the horizon for antennas that look suspicious, like discones mounted to the side of buildings or in trees. And lastly, a camera for photo documenting, along with the hiking GPS for coordinates. All for my own records though, not for turning 'em in.

Why not, ( I am just curious ) I feel our industry is under attack from every direction and this wild west mentality only causes legitimate broadcasters from serving the community. Especially since in this particular case the 96.3 pirate is indeed interfering with WSLR 96.5 LPFM

Pirates interfering with pirates! AAAAAAAARGH.....................

Pirates interfering with pirates interfering with legitimate licensee's

BTW 96.1 was back on seemed to move the antenna it covers more northward then before and seems to be lower power.

I tried listening today... 96.3 is way overpowering 96.1.. bleeding all over it too as well as 96.5.... Shame that this interference will likely involve the FCC soon if it continues to splatter on 96.5.. a licensed station then we'll lose 2 pirates that could have gotten along if they 96.3 wasn't using so much power... Can't we all get along...

This industry is under attack from itself. If we shut down every legal authorized station and let the "pirates" run free, not only would we have better entertainment and flow of information, we'd have some free speech too...

Well, the Radio Rejects (shameless plug) may be the wave of the future when it comes to entertaining radio. The inmates are running the asylum, but hey, maybe we should just call it "grunge radio"...

Anyway, true story about pirate stations: when I worked in the Cayman Islands one of my many GMs had been a major player with Cox who burned out and semi-retired to the Caribbean (he's now back stateside working for a small group in Oklahoma). He told me that for a while he had a big-ass house in Tulsa and instead of hard wiring it, decided to put a Radio Shack FM xmtr in his attic. He programmed it to run off a computer and did a full imaging package. His tastes were somewhat odd...he was partial to trance ambience... but anyway where he put his xmtr apparently was high enough to cover quite an area. During one rating period someone in his neighborhood got a diary and put his bootleg "station" logo down. He said he was never so unhappy to see a station of his show up in a book! I guess all he could think of was the FCC kicking down his doors and the resulting headlines: "Radio Station exec Busted for Running Pirate Station film at 11!" complete with video of him being frog-marched out of his house into a cop car...

I am running into a similar problem. My property isn't that big, but I live in a trailer. It is metal, of course. Trying to get the reception from stations I want, outside or inside, tends to be a problem.

That's the problem. Legitimate broadcasters (mostly corporate) don't serve the community. They serve shareholders.

If the advertisers didn't feel there was a return on investment, they wouldn't be spending their money on advertising with the station because nobody would be coming into their store as a result of listening to that station.

As a publicly traded company, the finances are available to be seen by those who invest in shares for that company. A person is not going to invest in that company if they feel that the advertisers are not getting ears.

I have oversimplified it, but it is a start without having a long drawn out post that even I will not read.

Your argument is cliche'-d at least, ignorant at best.

Sorry Jeff. Selling advertising has nothing to do with serving the community. I do not benefit from listening to non-stop ads about cars I can't afford to buy. I don't think I am in a minority when I say that as soon as an ad comes on I switch stations. Now business is so bad that stations are hawking themselves. WTAN, Cox, etc. Nobody wants to hear that crap.
