Microphone Processor

Looking for a new microphone processor. Has anyone had experience with some of the new APHEX products? Any other suggestions? Tried the Symetrix stuff but couldn't get the sound I wanted. Thanks.

Unless you have a good grasp of processing theory, the Symetrix is not a plug-and-play box. Come to think of it, none of the mic processor boxes are. The AirCorp or Rane units have fewer knobs, so they may be slightly easier to get something that is close to what you want.

But it you sit with it and have the patience and read the manual, the Symetrix will do everything you want it to and sound exactly the way you want. But, ya gotta spend the time.

I have heard things about the Aphex unit.

I bought the Aphex 230 mic processor and returned it with in 2 weeks. It was a bit too harsh for my liking. If you want a loud and edgy sound it might be a good option. I did like that the gate was before the compressor. If you're looking to go cheap try a DBX 286A, very easy to use and sounds good for the money. I've seen the 286A used in air studios on several stations.

Good Luck!

Personally, I didn't have all that good of luck with the 286a's. I couldn't get the sound I was looking for with them. I've had decent luck with the AirCorp and the Rane. I have a Valley 401 that I never got a chance to evaluate as it needs a couple of the pots replaced due to becoming snapped off.

Air Corp model 550TV is the box..not the PH..The TV has a variable release control that drastically improves the dynamic range, but retains the process..

The APHEX units have a gate..just that..a GATE..that is either open or closed..no variable like an expander..it cuts off vowel sounds, and cuts on and off abruptly.

I think the DBX 286A is excellent for $200. Good pre-amp, compressor, and high and low
frequency controls. Used moderately it sounds very good.

The expander in a $100 Samson S-com compressor is the best I've used. Adjustable speed, fast or slow,
and works undetected. The compressor works fine as well.

I think the mic and mic technique are far more important than the other hardware.
The end user of your voice (producer) is gonna take it and rip apart anyway "in the box".

I'll third that on the 286A. Excellent box for the price. If you've got $600 to drop I'd go for the AirCorp, but for the money you can't go wrong.

Glad you left out the "gate" because it is awful. If you just leave it off, the rest of the box
sounds fine for $200.

Yeah, the 286A gate is not good for voice. Might be okay for instruments.
A slow, adjustable expander is what you need. Samson S-Com works great.
