Microsoft to pull out of MSNBC.com

So many of you haven't read the article and are jumping the gun with your responses and speculations. This has nothing to do with MSNBC (the channel); this is about msnbc.com, which for sixteen years has been the website for all things NBC News/MSNBC (again, the channel)-related.

Microsoft did, in fact, pull out of the cable channel sooner than 2012: in 2005, to be exact. It has been a wholly-owned NBC (or Universal, or Comcast) property for six and a half years now.

MSNBC will remain MSNBC, while msnbc.com has become nbcnews.com.

I would be very careful with the spelling on that if you know what I mean. Now UXNBC could work, but I doubt it would catch on. Maybe save that for an extreme NBC sports channel or something like that.

Well How about NBC News/Talk Net Or UXNBC or CUNBC If Vs. can become NBC Sports Net. I know in the San Francisco Market we have Comcast Sports Producing San Francisco Giants games for KNTV11 the NBC O&O in the market. I'm not sure if there are RSN's owned by Comcast that are renamed NBC Sports "Your Market Here"

For that matter, some of this thread's speculation about MSNBC's long term future is amusing--the channel is profitable, even in the shadow of Fox News. Comcast isn't pulling the plug.

To clarify, I already knew nothing will change with the channel because it's an established brand. I was just humoring some people here.

I'm only speculating, but it's probably because MSNBC is the established name of the channel, and NBC didn't want to go through the trouble of rebranding. So now you have a situation in which the "MS" in "MSNBC" no longer officially stands for anything.

Similarly, "CBS" is no longer the "Columbia Broadcasting System," and AMC is no longer an abbreviation for "American Movie Classics."

Microsoft pulled out of MSNBC (the channel) in 2005. I'm sure its name will remain MSNBC, as the article implies.

The only thing is once Comcast buys out the remaining 49% of NBCUniversal, would they want the first two letters of their news channel branded with MS which most identify as Microsoft, another corporation?

Perhaps it's too soon as Comcast hasn't even bought out the remaining part of NBC but they still have influence with the 51%.

It's different than AMC and 'American Movie Classics' as the latter is not associated to another competing corporation.

Ok there is AMC Theatres, which plays movies, but somehow it's still different in my book.
