Mid Morning DX in Midwest

At 9:30AM CST 30 miles north of Chicago I'm currently hearing WSM, WTAM, 740 Toronto, WRFD 880, KDKA 1020, and a mix on 1130 of what is usually WISN only by this time. I think it's Detroit & Minneapolis also. WZFG was fighting it out with WTAM for a short time.

Yesterday I was listening to a strong 1010/WGUN Atlanta during my much earlier than usual drive home from work. 1510 WLAC also.

Take heed. The sunspots and electrical disturbance are coming, and what was, may no longer be...at least until things quiet down again.

Indeed, there were good conditions this morning after sunrise. I was driving between Dayton, OH and Lexington, KY on I-75 between 9:30 and Noon and clearly heard KSTP-1500 around Cincinnati and KRVN mixing it up with WRFD on 880 South of Cinci. Other catches included a Spanish language station on 1120 on top of KMOX. Who's that? This was around 11 AM. WTAM, Toronto on 860 (French), all the Chicago 50kw Stations, WISN and many others were also "in the clear". Also heard an ESPN station on 680...but probably NOT KNBR... My BOSE radio in my 2006 Silverado is a tremendous AM DX tool....

Haven't checked it lately here on Bull Shoals Lake on the Ark/Mo border, but this time a couple of years ago I was getting stuff from all over on the factory-installed set in a '93 Beretta -- mostly on the X-band, but did have a few days when 1560/KGOW, Bellaire (Houston) TX was like a local at 9:30 or 10AM, and one Saturday morning about that same time I drove all the way from here to HarrisonAR (25 miles) listening to 1200/WOAI, San Antonio, also like a local. May have to shuck these flannel jammies and go cruise me some backroads to get away from power lines and see what I can haul in. ((Yeayerrite -- we DO live an exciting 168-Hour Weekend here in the ArkaMozarks!))

I've been meaning to ask about KGOW's up that direction, and now I know. Here in East Texas about 200 miles from their transmitter site, it's a similar story. This time of the year KGOW is basically in all day, but signal strength slides downward after about 10:00 and comes back after 2:00 in the afternoon. During drive times their 50,000 watt daytime signal definitely sounds like a local. WOAI, around 250 miles away, is also present all day (and night, of course) year-round but their signal strength doesn't vary as wildly as KGOW, which often has long, deep fading.

I first happened across KGOW around 4:00 on a cloudy, cold November afternoon; didn't even know where they were from, although some of the traffic reports had a definite Houston sound to them. Got back home a couple of days later, found out their QTH, and figured it was just a one-time freak thing. But a couple of mornings later, I was running up to Branson and decided to see what the AM band was doing -- sure 'nuff, there was KGOW talking Houston-area highschool sports like I was cruising the 45! Heard them pretty frequently for awhile there, but haven't been able to decipher them in the hash in a long time. Still piddling around the house but will definitely give it a shot this afternoon and/or tomorrow morning. That WOAI mid-morning thing was one-time-only, although they come in here pretty well almost any night; same with 820/WBAP.

SW Ohio

Left the office at 11:45A today and was listening to a weak and fading spanish station on 1610, which I presume was CHHA in Toronto.

Also heard spanish on 1120. Anyone have an idea what station it might have been? I was thinking Maryville, TN, although they weren't talking sports when I heard them.

Almost all the regionals without a local presence had something going on. Couldn't listen long. Too bad for me.

I also heard the Spanish programming on 1120, and another on 810. Anyone know what those are?
Also Toronto was still coming in here in Northern Il at 11AM.

Finally made it out of here about 2:30P CST. Didn't even have to go to the (even more than here!) boonies and escape power lines. Got decent, but staticy, signal from KGOW, even under all the wires at our village's community center. Coming back down the main drag, also got what I'm pretty sure was WOAI, again with a lot of QRN. Tulsa's 740/KRMG was not audible, but picked up what was most likely WSB on 750. Sounded like their N/T format, and only other things Radio Locator shows that it might have been, are both Religious. X-band had fair-to-good signals on 1620, 1630, 1650, 1670 and 1690. Overcast here, but unseasonably warm, at 63 degrees. BTW, for my NJ==>Idaho===>Florida===>Idaho-again podjo: flipping back to FM in the car, picked up FayettevilleAR's 91.3/KUAF. Haven't tried FM DXing, but figure that's a pretty good grab, considering both Dx and terrain.
