Mid-Ohio update: WQIO-FM stunting, CC fires four beforehand...

As reported on the Columbus board and on OMW, and the Mount Vernon News:

CC handed over the keys of SAC WQIO/93.7 and standards WMVO/1300, both of Mount Vernon, to BAS Broadcasting on Saturday at midnight. Already some major changes in the combo are afoot.

93Q's now stunting with a continual loop of the imfamous Bobby McFerrin *hit* "Don't Worry, Be Happy," with messages interspered telling listeners to "Don't worry, we're building you a new radio station! Be happy..." Incidentally, those comments were echoed by BAS President Jim Lorenzen in the Mount Vernon News.

But not everyone's happy. CC didn't renew the contract of four WMVO/WQIO personalities: Ron Staats, Jenney Murray, Michael Stone and Michael Hayes. Staats had been with WMVO since January 1967; BAS reportedly wants him back.

For what it's worth, WMVO will stick with their standards format. But (if it can be picked up here) 93Q's stunting will end Monday at noon...

Sources told me that the four people let go were done so because BAS couldn't afford their pay. Of course they wont need as many people either because they are trying to take their focus to Community issues only...

They are keeping WWBK/WBZW's Eric Lee as Production Director, Imaging Director.
Plus Larry will stay around for a little while.
I think Bevington is going to stay too.

I was told that BAS wants to go a progressive AC format (watered down HOT AC) like Mix 94.1 Canton... They did recieve a Bob and Sheri radio demo about a month ago, hmmmmm.

So I could see Bob and Sheri Mornings, Larry holding down afternoons, John Tesh at night and maybe Eric in afternoons? However they might have Cher voicetrack afternoons on-top of her sales gig...

All of this may not happen. It may of just been a rumor spread around CC Mt Vernon. I guess we will all find out tomorrow at 12 noon...
Best wishes to all at B.A.S. Mount Vernon.

Yep, and somehow, I'd forgotten that you can actually pick out WQIO from the interference here...at least enough to confirm that they are indeed Bobby McFerrin radio. Don't worry, be happy, indeed!

BTW, here's the link to the Mount Vernon News article...the one in your message got munged by this board somehow:

<a target="_blank" href=http://www.mountvernonnews.com/local/093005/radio.html>http://www.mountvernonnews.com/local/093005/radio.html</a>

It appears Ron Staats may come back in some capacity, and at least two of the folks will end up on Y105, still working for Clear Channel. So, I'm not sure it's fair to say "CC fires four", as CC is obviously not going to employ people at two radio stations it no longer owns...and two of the four are apparently headed elsewhere in CC's Mid-Ohio cluster.

The lack of personnel appears solely driven by BAS' new vision for the station.

I suspect at 12noon someone will pot up a starguide receiver that is probally authorized for an ABC Networks format.... at least their other stations are running ABC stuff.. But never know.. though consdiering they let go some of the daypart folks at Q due to "budget" I suspect it will be filled with satellite delievered jocks, Guess we'll know in a few hours! I dont work there so I have no real clue what their going to do but only guessing :)

"Dont worry be happy.... unless your the one out of a job" My thoughts are with those that where let go.

YEP!

I guessed right! Right now Steve Everheart, is on! Today's Hits and Yesterday's favs from the ABC Radio Networks... Looks like my guess of them going with an ABC satellite feed was accurate. They are calling their station "Eagle 93.7 Today's Hits and Yesterday Favorites"

Apperently its not completely hooked up yet.. I am not hearing any "floating liners" before the satellite jock talks.

I did hear between a song a jingle for Today's Hits and Yesterday's favorites with Eagle 93.7 sung at the end

So looks like their on the bird!

Half working page setup at ABC Net's

The scratchy "Eagle 93.7" signal did slip into OMW World Headquarters in northwest Akron long enough for our ears to pick up the "Today's Hits and Yesterday's Favorites" moniker. And we took the same route you did, by punching in the Mount Vernon ZIP Code to the "Hits and Favorites" website...

Of course, considering all the signs ahead of time, it didn't really take Columbo to figure this one out. :D

BAS brings back one former CC staffer, is talking to another...

That was a error on my part. My bad.

Well, there's yet another update in Mount Vernon land on WQIO/WMVO. (Mount Vernon News staffer Dylan McCament is excellent, considering what we are treated to in Cleveland. Any more good reporting and I will subscribe to the News!)

http://www.mountvernonnews.com/local/100305/wmvo.html

BAS is at least retaining one of the four that CC couldn't keep: Michael Stone, formerly WQIO/WMVO ND, is back to cover local sports. They are also talking to Ron Statts about bringing him back.

For now, former 93Q middayer Larry Gilliland is assuming Ron's duties. (Hmmm, could Larry go back to 93.7 if Ron is brought back to WMVO?) The rest of WMVO's lineup is unaffected: local programming from 6a-2p; then ABC's standards channel.

I give BAS some credit. Jeff Neidert and Todd Klein sat in WMVO's local talk show, "Open Debate," this afternoon. Telling the Mount Vernon News that "we have nothing to hide," BAS actually wants to talk directly to the listeners. If so, here's a hint of what they want:

The lone unknown is if WQIO is keeping John Tesh on the lineup. OA, could you DX 'em?

What time does Tesh usually come on? I'm in NW Columbus and pick them up regularly at night.<P ID="signature">______________

Staats Probably Back, Stone Back, No Tesh

And they probably will. It sounds like he has a lot of support in that community (look at the sign!), and it sounds like WMVO is basically going to be unchanged.

As reported in other messages, WQIO is now Tesh-less, at least tonight. While driving around and picking out WQIO's signal from the static (and from co-channel WRKZ/93.7 in Pittsburgh!), we heard ABC's evening satellite jock, Tom Kennedy. No relation, as far as I know, to the veteran game show host by the same name!

The <a target="_blank" href=http://www.etoncorp.com/US/products/product.aspx?catID=2&subCatID=4&prodID=11>Eton E10</a>, a shortwave radio I picked up at Radio Shack the other day.

Unfortunately, I took it back. The shortwave bands are not nearly as well served and populated by English language secular programming as they were back when I was a regular SWLer a decade or two back, and it wasn't really worth the effort, especially when just about all the major international broadcasters are online now, and even on satellite radio.

The FM section was pretty good, though that alone was not quite enough to convince me to keep the thing. :D Now, if I hadn't spent $100 on the thing, I might have felt differently...

Is that the same as the Grundig S350? I think it's made by Eton.

Eton now makes Grundig stuff, true.

But the E10 is a different unit from the S350, which is also on Eton's new website:

<a target="_blank" href=http://www.etoncorp.com/US/products/product.aspx?catID=1&subCatID=9&prodID=24>http://www.etoncorp.com/US/products/product.aspx?catID=1&subCatID=9&prodID=24</a>

The E10 is a smaller, portable unit. I linked to its Eton company webpage in the previous message.

Woudn't surprise me if Tesh shows back up after a week or two off the station....
