Middays

Why are all the midday shows a woman disc-jockey? Don't get me wrong love women ;), but they are all run-of-the mill. Nobody fun. Although, at times I hear Sherry on 3ws say something that's clever. Everyone else just bites.

This is when I listen to the Sirius satellite.

What is everyone else's thoughts on why middays have to be a woman?

Nobody beat Trish Beatty on KDKA in the 80's from 2:00-4:30pm ;) Also Sara Lockard on weekends ::)

Those were the good old days :'(

They have to hire women to keep the EEOC, NOW, and all the other acronym groups and agencies happy, but they don't want to lose listeners during AM or PM drive time. That leaves midday.

Because the target audience is female?

Seriously, does anyone still believe that women will only listen to women? Or that men don't listen to the radio in the daytime because men are at work while the womenfolk are home doing the ironing?

When you have a 25-54 female demo, your target audience (women who work) generally finds another woman relatable. A man can also be relatable, but he had better be prepared to have the same dynamic (though presented differently, of course) that a female jock has. Women like a personality who can talk about things like work, kids, and running a household, all while still having a good knowledge of the music they're presenting.

Also, there are fewer women jocks in this business. One reason I've found is that there are VERY FEW women who see radio (and TV) as a long-term career endeavor. They get tired of the grind, hours and politics found in this business, and they move on to P.R. or other related profession. Usually it's a family-motivated decision.

I won't dispute that what you say is true. However, I've never once heard Michelle Michaels ever talk about kids or running a household. And before she was so rudely fired in favor of "Bob", I never heard Bonnie Diver talk about those things, either.

I don't know this for sure, but I suspect that the suits at Clear Channel think Michelle Michaels' voice sounds like she's a hottie.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't DVE's primary audience male? I would understand an AC station trying to relate to female listeners like this, not a rock station that is primarily a male demo.

The issue wasn't about what kind of station is involved, it's about why it seems that most stations have female DJ's in the midday slot.

Very true. However, Michelle Michaels was firmly established in this market before radio audiences started fragmenting like they have...same with Margie Konstantine over at WJPA. They're both institutions in this market and haven't really needed to change what they've been doing on the air for years.
