Middlesboro K-92

Anyone have any information on the old K-92 in Middlesboro? I worked there as an air personality in the mid 80's and I hear it switched a Christian format shortly thereafter.

Anyone know anything about the old DJ's??

My air name was Dave Lee. There was Terry Harrison (also the PD), RB, a few others.

Thanks for the response.

Dave

I can't help you with any DJ info but your post brought back some memories about going to WMIK aroung 1985 or 86 and interviewing for the morning opening on K-92. Needless to say I didn't get the job.

Yea, I was the evening guy, 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM signoff. The pay made it hard to stay around very long. $150.00 a week doesn't really pay the bills. Left for the Southern Ohio market and left the business all together in the late 90's. Still miss it though.

Dave

I can tell you anything you'd like to know about WFXY, but I don't know much about WMIK's history, particularly during that stretch of time.

I remember going to a few partys at the owner of the WFXY in the mid 80's but not alot else. For some reason I think they felt like we were a competitor, but Jim Ballard was never going to put enough money into that station to compete with anyone. Actually got a job offer or two from them shortly before leaving and going north.

I don't remember the owner's name that I interviewed with but didn't he also own the local billboard company?
I got the nichol tour of the station and he showed me the storage area for the signs. If I'm remember correctly the FM on air studio was up on a pedestal.

Yea, absolutely correct. The FM was just across from the AM and the storage area in the rear for the billboard company that Jim Ballard also owned. I think he tried but didn't want to invest much more into a radio station with that low power. I was kind of on the fence at times and liked to stir so controversy. His only response as owner was that he didn't want people picketing his station, anything short of that was OK.

I wish he could have added some power to it to reach a better portion of the Knoxville market and could have been successful with classic rock. But that area also is largely part of the bible belt and may be successful in the religious format. I haven't been back to the area in 10 or 12 years , so that is hard to estimate.

Alot of fond memories of the area and the station. Alot of remotes and public appearances, something a jock in his mid 20's would love!

Dave

K-92 was a stepping stone station by Jim Ballards design. It would be impossible to stay there long making $150.00 a week plus sales commissions nearly amounting to zero. He sold local spots and no more. With some effort and MONEY it could have been in the Knoxville books.

Since the AM station has gone to 2.5kw it is listenable by car in the north Knoxville area but the FM signal doesn't carry this far even with the tower as high as it is. I believe the currwnt owners, Gateway Broadcasting, are a part of the Binghamton Bapt. Church in Middlesboro, Ky.

Yea, that's the last I heard. A local church had taken it over. Too bad. I thought The station had great potential with some work. The first that needed to be done was power. Needed to be stronger and a 24 hour station, not signing off at 11:00 PM.

I have to admit I was sad of K-92 going off the air. I think it served the public well and was a blast to work there. I still miss the station and living in that community.

Dave

Haha well, considering that KYEE is a thousand miles and change from Middlesboro, I'm not entirely sure anybody on this board would know anything about it. I could be wrong, though.
