I heard that Magic tanked....even with Christmas music...

Is it True?

Apparently YES. They were MORE THAN DOUBLED by Lite-FM and came in at #11 in the Middlesex-Somerset Book. This is not so good news for Greater Media given the fact that WMGQ usually tops out around the top 5. They have dropped nearly at 2 share since the Fall 2004 book. Hmmmm what to do with WCTC AND WMGQ!! Maybe GM should see what exactly seems to be working in Morristown and implement some changes in New Brunswick and Point Pleasant!

What did Magic do wrong?

Whats their problem?

(I am outside the listening area...)

They should have kept the normal AC playlist going until Christmas Eve. Ratings around the country generally prove that if the market-leading station took an early jump on an all-Christmas format, then other stations which also go all-Christmas had no hope of catching up. After all, Christmas music is Christmas music, and if you tune your office or store radio to one station in mid-November when they go all-Christmas (i.e. WLTW), then you're not likely to switch to any other station when they also go all-Christmas a few weeks later (i.e. WMGQ). BUT... there would be an open opportunity for that second station to continue with a regular AC playlist, to pick up all the listeners who deserted the market-leading station when it went all-Christmas. That's the opportunity which WMGQ missed by switching to its own "me-too" all-Christmas format after Thanksgiving.
