No doubt a bad flux capacitor which has confused 2008 with 1968. About the only thing Mighty about 11~Ninety is the amount of money different outfits have paid for it thinking McLendon's magic can be brought back!

Could have been if CC has gotten off their fat a**es and opened up the pattern since they own co channel KEX in Portland....but NOOOOOOO...they spent $18mill for it and it has sat there as a fat cow chewing on its chud....and not doing anything...No wonder CC's stock is in the toilet and the deal MAY fall through..AFter seeing all the hubbub about WLS 89Rewind, I think an AM could revive the band if done right (They said AM music was dead in the 80s..and then KULF in Houston became KKBQ with Landers and the Q Morning Zoo...and 790 shot to the top 5 in one book!! Its all about content folks..but when you put crap on it, you get crap out of it...)

But by 1987 KKBQ (AM) had sunk into a straight-up FM simulcaster, which it remained for 11 years. The success was short lived.

Options for 1190 as I see it:

Make it 24 hour newsradio operation. Heavy use of AP Radio's 24 hour newswheel format with local inserts updating local stories, traffic, weather, and sports. During drivetimes 6-9 and 4-6, use expanded local programming. Could be semi-automated like is done on television for Headline News and TXCN. Anchors record stories in various forms that rotate like songs in a music format...station would be manned in case of breaking news, at which they'd go live. Could make use of Metro's news anchors locally. Perhaps work a tie-in with a local TV station whereby their reporters could report or feed audio (bites) to the station in exchange for crosspromotion or somesuch.
Local segments would feature top stories and various "daily segments"...that rotate in and out.
The biggest negative on an all news station is it is cost heavy. This would be a way of making it more affordable. There is a way for this to work.

Option 2: Oldies. Play all the great oldies (500 songs) and on a very light rotation all the one's that most oldies stations don't play (the other 1500 songs). Get some fun retro jingles (those are VERY affordable these days)...hire some local talent who'd almost do it for fun and let 'em voicetrack from home (those systems are fairly affordable too now). There's a lot of out-of-work DJ's who'd probably jump at the chance to do a local shift at an affordable part time salary, perhaps some network people who'd be interested in a side gig. Do 3 hour jock shifts (fresh every 3 hours!)...let 'em have fun with it...do some easy, fun instant win promoting (T-shirts, free tickets, Oldies CDs etc)...make it upbeat, fun, exciting, and keep the music flowing with jock talk on intro's and quick in and outs to spots (that you'll hopefully get)...would you rather have live jocks 24/7? Sure, but at least to start, you'd have to find a way to do it on a budget and still maintain a high quality. The "right" people can make this happen when properly motivated, instructed, and given the tools to work with.

Option 3: Pick up "The Oldies Channel" from ABC Radio Network. Scott Shannon's Oldies format would be an interesting fit on the heritage frequency, perhaps with a local morning show. Where is Zippo anyway?

Option 4: Keep the Classic Country format. Hire local DJ's to voicetrack as mentioned above. Put at least a MINIMUM of effort into it! Get rid of the sad, tear in my beer music in favor of some more upbeat great country classics of the past 4 decades! Think Hank Jr NOT Hank Sr.

Option 5: Push "7" and "Lower".

Option 6: Make a deal with KLUV, pick up KLUV's HD-2 format.

There you go!!

Hmmmm....wonder what that button does?

How 'bout Willies' Place (XM13) if you must play music?! But playing music on AM makes as much sense as Bubba advising Hillary. As long as this is a former McLendon station, why not give his All Want Ads format a shot? Nurse Jeff and I can hear it now: The Mighty 11~Ninety...The Metroplex Penny Saver Of The Air ;D

Excellent suggestions, Steve. Option 1 would take some daring and resourcefulness, something radio seems to be short on these days, but all five options would be relatively easy to do. Option 5 is hilarious: turn station off. Inside joke for those who've worked AM daytimer remote transmitter controls: "To Turn Off Power, Push Button Marked '7' Then Press Button Marked 'Lower' Until 'Power Level' Reaches '0.'"

Well I was close--I thought it meant switch to the Rockwall site.
"Good night Fort Worth!" ;)

Kill it
The land the towers sit on is worth more than any other asset they have.

It would even have its own theme song.

Cue the Honey Cone!

And how about with TM's Phase II jingle package?

In the fall of 2000 I was in the area for an air show. At the time 1190 was in between owners and outside of some high school sports and a legal ID it was non-stop pre-Beatles oldies. While driving around I found myself listening to them as it was the broadcast equivalent of a ghost ship. The frequency was a shadow of itself playing music that represented a time when it was the most influential radio station anywhere as you felt the spirit of former greatness. On the bright side, I did hear the pattern/site change.

Even a new millennium version of Gordon McLendon couldn't perform a miracle with 1190. To that end, 16 towers, a ground systems and two pieces of property might be worth more in liquidation that it is as a functioning radio station. Option 5 might be the logical choice.

That was closed down in July of '05.

I would go with something in the oldies vein.

Steve,

Good options...all! However...you and I are broadcasters. The people that make those decisions these days are anything but!

You going to Mike's luncheon on the 29th? Haven't seen you since TxRHOF in November. Pretty sure Bud's going. It would be fun to visit again.

Andy

Ya' know, Steve. Make First Broadcasting an offer to simulcast 1190 with Oldies Powerhouse "1650 Oldies Radio." ;>)

At the risk of appearing to be a complete doorknob what does Option 5: Push "7" and "Lower" mean?

(Doesnt matter which button) to a jock or engineer, pushing the "Lower" on a remote control usually means turning something down or off.....in this case, Steve meant the transmitter!

Steve's idea of going all news is a great one. Just have local 30 min news the first part of the hour, then go to CNN headline news the other thirty. That way each could be updated and you would have a network source. In the mid 70's the old NBC
" News and information service" on WRR AM sounded very good . Every 15 min there was a ten min slot for local news and sports.
