Mighty 580 KSAZ Changes Format

Just listened to KSAZ and it doesn't take much imagination to hear they are going Country. Station ID is different and every 5 minutes they promo Country Artists coming to Tucson. Good luck Mr. Barna. Now you will have two Country station operating 96.3 KSWG and 580 KSAZ. The coverage should be huge for Arizona with both stations.

Thank goodness Timeless Classics will be gone soon. Name me any market in the country that has 4 adult standards stations in it. I would bet Dan Babich is gone as well. Hopefully all the infomercials go as well.

I would of turned it into an all NEWS station.

I'd be happy if they just ran old airchecks of Jefferson K,
Ted Behr and Russ O'Hara, complete with generous doses
of cue burn. ;)

BTW, there was a previous period of "KIKX Country" on
the Giant 580, after the kidnapping hoax and before
the ticket was (finally) yanked.

Dancin' Dan Babich out? No way! Just rebrand him as Boot Scootin' Babich and let him continue to sell his time 'cause the Mighty 5~Eighty needs the bucks! Music on AM ~ why didn't Nurse Jeff and I think of that??

Barna may have already dumped some or all of "colon blow"
in prep for the format flip. Friday morning 6-6:30 was the
usual satellite music feed, as was the case this morning at
7 after Dancin' Dan.

Now where is radioguy58 with all the info on the new Giant 580?

I guess I saw things a little different KJCB.

He was at KFNX after being out of radio a long time and KFNX had NO ratings in that stations history with FB there. The all News, all Talk, all local produced KFNX, it's first ratings. The minute he left and they went back to brokered time, the ratings went back to zero. The lead turned to LITTLE RATINGS success.

Three years later AIM signs a deal to purchase KSAZ and two in Vegas and one in Phoenix. The deal bombs and Barna stays and helps a dear friend of mine out of a big jam, for the last year and a half. I might have a different idea for a format but I know that KSAZ made over eight times the money last year than any previous year it was operated. This year I was told it was at an even pace with last year. I know for a fact Bill Ehlinger is very appreciative of Barna. The lead has turned to GOLD at KSAZ, the verdict is still out on what to do with AM radio stations. I wish them well, I don't think they have to generate much revenue to be a success with country on KSAZ. I think it has to be tough operating a station as a one man show.

If there is anything that country music fans appreciate, it is live local air talent. Contrary to common belief it doesn't cost a fortune to hire some good personalities. KSAZ probably doesn't understand that so they will air junk off the satellite and end up with close to zero in the ratings. They will save some small change and lose more than they save.

I didn't necessarily say it was his fault. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Let's not sugar coat things, though.

KFNX never had ratings because that wasn't the model. Barna may have been right to go local, but bringing back tired has-beens didn't work out too well. The station lost a ton of money. That's what happens when you build a news-talk station, but when the station in question is in bankruptcy, maybe you ought to take that into account. Now KFNX is back doing brokered time (albeit it somewhat differently than before) and making a lot more money than when it had ratings. Which is more important? It's almost impossible to sell spots on an independent, one-in-the-cluster AM with a 0.5 or a 0.7. That's why KSAZ, the Jolt, etc. have a difficult time. You have no economies of scale and few people know who you are... people (stupidly) want to advertise on their favorite station, and if you've got a 0.7, chances are, you aren't it.

The Ehlingers are nice people and it's unfortunate they got caught up in all this. That's why it's called being in business, and why most people work at a desk for $20 an hour rather than take on the risk. It's billing eight times what it did before because for much of the time the Ehlingers ran it, the office was empty during the day and they didn't really care about making money. The only time I worked for an actual station after age 21, I increased the billing by 10x in six months. Hooray for me, but in reality, when the owner lives 1500 miles away and has half a dozen other ventures occupying him, it wasn't tough. When I left, it went below the abysmmal levels it was at when I came in. Which is probably what will happen to KSAZ; some operators can fund the deficits, others can't.

Of course it's tough operating a one man show. That proves why there is so much brokered time on AM. If stations playing "legitimate" formats could make enough to have more than one staffer, they would. It's out of necessity. KSAZ's signal makes it more sad, but they have been late to the game selling themselves. You can make fun of the brokered stations like KFNX, but many of them have staffs much larger than the "one man shows" you speak of. I'd bet KFNX has several times the staff of both of CC's Phoenix AMs excluding KFYI. Same for similar stations.

You had many good points but it doesn't matter who is running a station they are all REPLACEABLE. You can always find someone to do it cheaper, better or more efficient.

KFNX lost money because of Batataglia and his gambling addiction. The KFNX model was to go bankrupt, screw employee's out of their money. Talk to employee's that worked there prior to going talk. Sad, very sad. A big staff makes a radio station? Why would you have a big staff to broker time? All you need is sales staff and an automation program. You can't put KFNX in the same category as radio stations in Phoenix, they are equal to any internet radio. If the books say they are making money and the only person who knows that is the bookeeper the manager and the owner. KSNX does have a persectus out and is quietly soliciting the station, I have a copy.

KFYI when it started LOST quite a bit of money BUT it had an owner willing to take it to the top, financially and ethicly. Any radio station making money and paying the bills is a successful business.

This post was to be about KSAZ going country and the response from the community. Barna was dumped a sack of potatoes and he needs to do something with it. I think he stayed helping KSAZ way longer than I expected. Once he gets a staff I expect him to be back in Phoenix and Santa Barbara. I know he doesn't read this board unless someone emails him a quote, and I know he travels to watch his sons college games for the next 4 months, I just hope KSAZ Country is a success.

I wish radio was more about lifting people up and elevating them to greatness than tearing people apart, ripping what they do and trying to make one's self look better. I would hope this board is to maybe give stations ideas and help to make the RADIO product better.

KJCB I apologise after my last sentence, which is what I truly believe, I reread my post and I cut your buddy Battaglia. Big sorry on that, I guess I fell into what I am against. I wish I could delete that post. SORRY.

Don't know what you're sorry for, but while I appreciate your determining who my friends are, a brokered station often times relies much less on automation. Who do you think runs the local mortgage shows? Or whatever the shows are these days? Do you think 1190 had more board ops as a brokered station with local hosts coming in and out, or as a standards station?

No format flip yet--or at least as of early evening today
before the power drop. Still running Tiresome Classics.

And again no colon blow at 6 this morning.

We know Barna can walk on water...but can he raise the dead?? While monitoring the Mighty 5~Eighty through the hash of KFWhyEye, the Nurse and I heard a rejoiner claiming Buck Owens was coming to Tucson. YIKES!!

Heard that as well, Doctor. That's one concert I'll skip too! :) No disrespect to the gentleman from Bakersfield. Maybe he's been hanging out with Walt Disney and Ted Williams.

When's the switch? Classic country has been gone from Tucson for at least ten years.

Well, not quite ten years; more like seven. Before Jim Slone sold it, KCUB was classic country. Their ratings haven't improved one bit since the switch to sports talk. Big conglomerates don't like classic country but they love sports talk even if hardly anyone listens to it.

Speaking of Slone, it seems like KCEE is playing more classic country than ever. Apparently Slone isn't concerned that 580 will be dominant in the format.

Final thought. What is KSAZ waiting for? All they have to do is switch to a different transponder.

A very familiar voice just told me KSAZ might be waiting on a contract for a live morning show. That could of been done to stop me asking questions but, aren't Tim and Willie sitting at home in Phoenix? I would think they have ego's to big for Tucson but you never know.
