Mike Addams Leaving WMJX-106.7

Longtime WMJX-106.7 morning man Mike Addams has announced that he is retiring after 19 years there (and many years before that at other Boston stations).

His last show is scheduled for Friday, June 28th.

While I hope that either Nancy Quill (current midday hostess) or Dan Justin (current afternoon host) gets promoted to mornings (I think either would be very successful in morning drive), WMJX owner Greater Media also owns and syndicates the "Bob & Sheri" morning show which is heard on many AC stations across the country. I wonder if Greater Media might decide to pull a "fast one" and use the occasion of Addams' retirement to muscle "Bob & Sheri" on WMJX (which I think would be a mistake).

Hrmmm. Anybody else find the timing of this curious given all the changes there lately?

Speaking of, I noticed this weekend that they now have spoken voiceovers -- something I don't recall Magic ever having before.

Although WMJX-106.7 is not owned by Clear Channel, CC today (June 17th) rebranded WLIT-93.9 Chicago from "Lite" to "My 93-9 FM".

Might Greater Media look to drop the 31-year "Magic" name and refer to WMJX as "My 106-7 FM"??

Another thought...Dan and Candy in the morning and Karen Blake for PM Drive, particularly now that they are more rhythmic.

It is interesting - they get rid of Amanda in AM drive, move Candy... now Mike Addams is leaving. Read the statement - no quote from Addams himself. That itself sounds fishy...

The guy is pushing 70 and getting a farewell show. What's fishy about that?

Back in the late 90s, when I had a job that took me to the Bangor Maine area once a week, I listened to Bob and Sheri on their Bangor affiliate (which just recently changed formats from an easy listening type format to sports; B&S moved to WKSQ in Bangor) and loved their show. Then, I ended up moving to North Carolina (which is their home state although they are based in Charlotte and I was on the coast) and continued listening for the two years I was there. Then I moved back home to Mass and haven't listened to them since (about 12 years). Not that long ago (last year?), they were on 107.1 WERZ in Portsmouth, New Hampshire but have since been replaced.

I would not completely agree with the person who said they are on in tiny little markets (Charlotte isn't that tiny) but I really don't think they would do well in a market like Boston. And, as I recall, they take (or used to take) a huge amount of time off. I always found Sheri very amusing but the show overall was kind of vanilla and they tried too hard to sound "local" and not from Charlotte, NC. Having said that, I'd check them out again on my drive to work if they ended up on a station here.

For the record, he is 65...he's born in early July, 1947, so he'll be 66 next month.

He did a great job doing nights at WRKO in the mid-70s...really connected with the kids. Anyone remember when he was part of the promotion of the Bay City Rollers way back then? IIRC, he "toured" with them for a short while.

Glad to see Addams is getting a last show. He is one of the very few WRKO top 40 talent that did well later in the market-- There's Dale and there's Frank Kingston Bobby Mitchell Smith and there's Tom Kennedy but that's about it, given the number of jocks RKO ran through that station.

and yup, I'm sure I'm forgetting someone

Amanda was filling in for Allison Demers on Hartford's Lite 100.5 this morning. She's on vacation this week and their using this opportunity to showcase different fill-in hosts. Yesterday they had Kim Zachary formerly of Springfield's MIX 93.1 WHYN-FM.

So did anyone listen to Mike's last show yesterday? I did not (I never listened to him anyway) but I'm curious how it went.

There is a slideshow of his final shift on the front page of Magic's website. Lots of people came by to wish Mike well including current and former Magic staffers Candy O, Gay Vernon and others; Hank Morse, Loren & Wally, and Tom Doyle from WROR; JW and Lori from Country 102.5 (yes I know Hank also does news on 102.5 but he is ID'd in the slideshow as from WROR); and Pebbles from Hot 96.9.

I heard a few minutes of Mike's final show on Friday. I heard the recorded well wishes from Karen Blake and Harvey Leonard. Otherwise it was regular format in between the special greetings.

;D What would help them a lot is, on "Bedtime Magic" They should play some Nice, New Soft Romantic (Korean, Cambodian, Chinese, Laos, Thai, Vietnamese, Spanish, Greek, Russian, Arabic, Japanese, and Farsi) music, but it all has to be (Nice, New, Soft, and Romantic)
That's what they should do
;D ;D :D :D :) :) ;D ;D ;D
