Mike and Mike on KZQ?!?!?

Who thought it was a good idea to put a sports talk morning show on an alternative station? 96.1 KZQ Myrtle Beach now has Mike and Mike in the am drive.

I wouldn't be surprised if the airing of "Mike and Mike" on KZQ is just the beginning. With a few exceptions in major markets, AM won't bill a dime unless the airtime is brokered. Also, the yearly fees for the ESPN brand are so high, FM makes the only sense.

Of course, I have no idea how the former morning show was doing (was it a local show?), but this is a very odd move regardless of wanting to take advantage of the FM signal. While I'm sure there's sports fans who listen to the station, there's probably a good many that would never listen to a sports talk show so I'm sure it's likely to alienate at least a portion of their Alternative station (which I had considered the best alt station in the state).

awp69: I've been out of the market since January and I still hear yapping about Cumulus going to their proprietary sports network (CBSSN). The previous syndicated morning show ON WKZQ, "Free Beer and Hot Wings", is one of the worst morning shows in the history of radio. Marconi is still spinning in his grave over those morons getting a syndicated deal (which was a cheap sell to prospective affiliates).

Ah, yes, I visit Myrtle Beach quite often (my father lives there), but never had the pleasure of hearing that show. I do remember hearing it advertised. Outside of the morning show, I was impressed with the variety of the station -- aside from currents, playing some decent '80s/'90s alt tracks that often aren't played on other Alternative stations.

Sad. NextMedia has, little by little, chewed up WKZQ's legacy and shat it out its collective behind.

RIP.
What do you expect? This is the company that decided 1450 AM was good enough for all the seniors, causing Easy 105.9 and a simulcast partner for Georgetown (94.5, then 100.7) to go after that audience and end up being number 1 in total numbers for years.

Excellent point.
