MIKE FM 94,7

Recently I've seen TV ads for MIKE FM. The scene is an office, the actors are middle aged. Of particular notice is a big fat guy who reminds me of Lenny Clarke and a pregnant woman (at least I think she's pregnant) who along with all the other office workers, start removing their clothes. Their tag line is "We play everything". I know that I'm no longer in anyone's demographic, but I usually can understand ads that are directed at certain segments. I can't, for the life of me, figure out to whom these ads are directed. Is it fat ugly middle aged, office workers, pregnant strippers............who?

Have never listened to the station and have no plans to. This ad is off the charts stupid.

Probably is.......my mistake. I've never listened to it, only seen the commercials.

Wasn't this talked about already?
Regardless, this type of commercial has been used before. I first saw it in San Diego in the mid 90s for Star 100.7. In that version, several local staffers were used, and the theme was "It's all you need to put on."

Here's a youtube link to the Mike FM spot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqT-QGek9Uw

Based on the youtube spot, this appears to be the same canned format spot which was running earlier in the spring/summer.

Everyone seemed to hate it, but it got people taking and, IIRC, newspaper coverage, which I guess was the point.

TSB

Mike FM - we play everything, most of which you don't want to hear

I wonder if the Variety Hits format on Mike is as Classic Rock based as the JACK FM format from ABC? I recall when I was in Boston, Mike was playing lots pop, unlike JACK. But has that changed now?

I miss listening to Star 93.7 in the car, I could leave that station on for the longest time, and maybe 1 song out of 20 would cause me to change the station. I think since Mike started, maybe there's been 2 or 3 times that I could leave the station on for more than one song, they just play a good mix, and I don't get the Mike/Doug/Jack format.

There is a huge hole in Boston for a rhythmic formatted station. Basically, there is pretty hard core hip hop on 94.5 (worse to listen to than a real urban hip hop station in other markets), there's soccer mom pop on Kiss 108, and that's it. Perhaps Oldies 103 will play a Motown song and that's about as rhythmic as it gets.

Star's departure left a lot of people with nowhere to turn on FM. And, HD-2 stations won't cut it. NOBODY has the radios to tune them in yet. Maybe in 2017, but not now. So, it's a pale suggestion that you should tune to Star on 93.7 HD-2 (comment aimed at Entercom, not you Eli).

It really says something when even Salt Lake City has more rhythmic formatted stations (including a rimshot with the "movin" format) than Boston!!

MIKE finished #5 in W25-54 and A25-54 in the spring book which is pretty good, but they suffer a little on the advertising side without some personalities for endorsements. The website also needs to be built up and it needs a real identity. The format seems to be pretty popular as a "compromise" choice and I seem to be hearing it more in stores lately.

If you want to spend for an HD car stereo, the Star format is on the 93.7 HD-2.

I do listen to Funkytown online (www.star937fm.com) but I can't get it in the car....wouldn't want to put that kind of money in the car I have now LOL

something to look forward to:

Streaming Internet Radio in your Car
http://www.hear2.com/2007/10/this-is-what-i-.html

note this is LIVE radio streaming to the car via the 'smart-phone'

Notice there's no transmitter - Clear Channel, Entercom, Salem - none of them will matter.

There has always been a hole in Boston for a true FM RnB station. WILD-FM sort of tried to give it a shot, but without a strong frequency it won't make it too well.

JMN plays too much hip hop and it and XKS play their currents WAY too often and recurrents more often then currents at other stations.

I really could see 104.1 going to a Urban/Rhythmic AC format. I know they would probably alienate most of their current listeners but here is what I would do:

a)KEEP the call letters. WBCN could stand for Boston's CLUBBIN network.

b)put some currents on WZLX

c)I would probobly use the Movin format

d)I would keep the PAtriots. As soon as the game ends go right into the music.

e)I wouild also look into a rock/dance based show during the weekend. It is sort of a way to pay tribute to the nearly 4 decade old Rock heritage.
