MIKE FM - Why no morning show?

Can someone explain something to me? With Boston being a Top 10 Market....why does MikeFM still operate without a morning show. I understand that the idea of a 'variety hits' format is to be a jukebox....but I still think it would improve with a music intense morning show. Has the idea ever been brought up? What is the decision to stay morningless?? Is it financial?

Geeezzzzzz, maybe some people think that incessant yacking about inane subject matter would be boring to some listeners and could it be a marketing choice to serve those ears who like to hear music for their morning drive/wake up??????

I don't know.....do you really think a morning show in a Top 10 Market with this format would have "incessant yacking about inane subject matter"? I wouldn't hope so.....

If you want yakking, Entercom offers these fine models. Take a test drive on your morning commute.

The Dennis and Callahan Morning Show, on WEEI (with rich Corinthian leather, and Meter.)

The Hill-Man Morning Show on WAAF/WKAF (That's not to be confused with Reed Hillman, who was
Muffy's running mate)

Finneran's Forum on WRKO (Would you buy a used car from this man?)
Beep beep, beep beep, yeah.

Personally I wish they'd have something like The Bob Rivers Show up in Seattle (KZOK)...guy has done
song parodies ("The 12 Pains of Christmas") and tapes I've heard of the show are pretty interesting/funny.
Not that he's syndicated, though... http://www.bobrivers.com

Mike is a waste . Nobody want to hear MC Hammer , U2,Will Smith,The Doors, and The Weather Girls together . YUCK !

Yes, they should plays them separately. This used to happen a lot in the old days when techs used to forget to bulk erase the carts before recording over them.

TSB

However I can think of Aerosmith and Run DMC appearing on the SAME track and it was pretty good:
The remake of Walk This Way.

"Yo turn it down, turn that noise down..."
Then they meet and like the old Reese's ad might put it, you got rap in my rock
You got rock in MY rap
But it tastes so good!

Wikipedia: "The song was the first hip-hop track to make the Top 10 on Billboard's singles charts. "Walk This Way" has been attributed to being the first song to make hip hop mainstream due to its frequent airings on MTV."

a bit off-topic and self-centered but I'm going to do a REAL Mike type show one week where I plug in my MP3 player to my mixer and put it in shuffle. It's mostly punk, hardcore, garage and metal but there are a few offbeat things on there too. I'll see what pops up. If nothing else, it'll make show-prep a lot easier that week instead of having to spend a good chunk of the day organizing the show. :D

To add a morning show to MIKE would be asking PD Ron Valery to actually go out on a limb and test his abilities to create programing. That's not a very good way to stay employed in this, or any other, market. Just give them more of what the last guy did and blame the consultants when it all goes wrong; that's how you grown in this company. :-\

Well...I don't know about that.....but from this outsiders view....I doubt he has that ability. I am sure even if he wanted to have a morning show.....it would have to go through Julie Kahn and other channels.....I doubt he has the authority to say 'Ok, I want a morning show on this station'....I mean, how much power does the PD have in this very corporate situation?

Back in the mid 80's, while commuting to college, I almost always listened to Bob and Zip on the WAAF morning drive show. Didnt listen to WAAF any other parts of the day...hated the music. When Bob left for Baltimore, it wasn't the same. I believe Greg Hill (someone correct me if I'm wrong) took over Bob's slot, at least temporarily, and they tried a Greg and Zip show. But Zip was out of his element without Bob and he barely said a word. For that matter, Greg Hill seemed out of his element despite the fact that he now has the morning show (which I've never listened to).

That was in 1987...I don't recall what station(s) and/or morning show(s) I moved on to at that point for my commute. Maybe WXLO/Worcester? WSRS/Worcester (if they had moved away from elevator music yet)? Loren and Wally?? Joe and Andy?? Some combination thereof? It's a mystery. ;D

It's been a while since I've even looked at the 12+, much less anything actually meaningful, but supposedly WMKK/Mike does reasonably well in the ratings. Not "great"...nowhere near it, in fact...but reasonably well.

The key, however, is that Mike is far, far, FAR cheaper to operate than a "normal" radio station. The staff costs are much less since there's no DJ's...just the sales guys, really; I wouldn't be surprised if most of the other operations of Mike were rolled into job descriptions for other stations at Entercom. Although admittedly I wouldn't be surprised if that's NOT true, either...but either way, the lack of DJ's & similar airstaff saves a few hundred thousand per year in salary & benefits costs; maybe even over a million. So even if the ratings aren't "tops", and thus the ad dollars aren't "tops", the overall return on investment is rather nice.

Personally, I think it's kind of the point that Mike not have a morning show; if you wanted one of those, you'd listen to another station. If you want MUSIC in the morning (which a smallish but no doubt sizable audience does) then you listen to Mike.

First, Ron Valeri is the guy who also oversees WAAF and he's built the Hill Man Morning Show into a top three show among M18-34/M18-49, its target demo. He's also overcome a signal disadvantage to blow past WBCN, the heritage rocker in Boston. He's taken the MIKE format, which has failed in many markets and is making it work

Does he have the authority to add a morning show? I don't know, but I know that MIKE won't have one WITHOUT his approval. I agree with the folks who think that a morning show defeats the mission, but from an advertiser standpoint it might be helpful.
