Mike Francessa: Weatherman

Did anyone happen to catch the first hour of Francessa's show on Friday? He whined about how everyone was making such a big deal about a little snow and berated several callers who had the nerve to say they had heard forecasts of up to 2 feet of snow on Long Island. He then gave what he claimed was an "official" weather report, the source of which was never revealed, that predicted only 3-6 inches of the white stuff, giving creedence to his assertion that it would be "no big deal". I finally had to turn him off, because I could tell it was going to be one of those kind of shows, a slow sports news day and 5 hours to fill.

how mildly surprisingly irrisponsible, seriously, if people actually were only listening to him, this could have caused them some serious problems.

To paraphrase: Don't need a fat man to tell me which way the weather blows...

Nice! I bet Bob Dylan would approve! LOL!

Mike Francesa (correct, one s) must be right up there with Jimmy Buffett (correct, two t's) in the rankings of names more people seem to get wrong than right. I've seen numerous AP stories, including some by folks with "AP Entertainment Writer" as their vanity tag, that refer to the singer-songwriter as Buffet.

And right now he's defending himself from his usual critics about his prediction from the other day.

Of course Francesa is gonna talk about other things this time of year since football ended, spring training is just starting, and he doesn't really care about basketball or hockey.

Franny-C's 3 to 6-inch "report" was likely based on a stripe some weather agencies were layering for a time over a narrow chunk of NY, including downtown Manhattan, Staten Island, parts of Queens & Brooklyn and a slice of coastal New Jersey.

Not that this is any excuse; weather agencies were having a difficult enough time pinning down accumulations for this area due to a wobbly freeze line, as well as a still uncertain bulls-eye where two storms would ultimately merge, just offshore. Our errant sportscaster did a disservice to listeners. He should have left the weather forecasting to the experts, while urging listeners instead to err on the side of caution and prepare for the worse.

Since I'm mostly not a talk-radio listener and less infrequently a sports-talk tune-in (which makes me either super-objective or a non-factor) I gotta confess that I can't understand the bombardment of Francesa. Heck -- I'm just a guy with a good portable radio, tuning around to hear some background commerce on odd jobs, until some 40-element stop-set makes me start to use bad words.

The times I've tuned in his radio show (and even twice on TV when someone we visited had him on), I found it all sufficiently sitthroughable for :20 minutes or so, maybe :45. He does sort of have this John Gotti thing going for him, bit I'm from Queens NY, know what the strut is all about, and hey -- the fellow can't help how he looks.
And anyway, isn't :15 or :20 minutes supposed to be the average attention span? Anyone who monitors the show for hours just to find flaws and other screwups needs a new hobby, I think.

Oddly, I've been a big fan of one of his nemeses for decades -- Phil Mushnick.

But no, I will not be tuning in WFAN during the afternoons for updates and predictions on next week's Storm Of The Century. Thanks for the heads-up.

I don't hear Craig Allen analyzing the latest Ranger game... stick to sports and other light topics, Mike.
