Since 1982, Dick Bartley has been hosting America's live, Saturday night request oldies party. The show began as "Solid Gold Saturday Night"; transitioned into the "Rock & Roll Oldies Show"; and since 1991 (with ABC) has been known as "Rock & Roll's Greatest Hits!" Live, coast-to-coast every Saturday night, Dick takes your requests via the toll-free hotline (1-888-222-1965) and spins the greatest hits of all time.

Since 1982, Mike Harvey has been hosting "SuperGold". Live, coast-to-coast every Saturday night, Mike takes your requests via the toll-free hotline (1-888-978-1003) and spins the greatest hits of all time.

I've always liked Bartley, but not for his Sat show. I thought "Yesterday Live" (Sunday) was a great show for the 5-6 years it ran. They played some interesting stuff and I do miss it.

For years, Mike Harvey has been the only choice in east central Indiana. "SuperGold" just recently began airing on WERK 101.7/104.9 in Muncie and before that on Indianapolis' former Gold 104.5 (now 104.5 JACK-FM).

But I will always have fond memories of Dick Bartley. I began listening to him in 1985 at the age of 13 (on several different stations over the years.... I always managed to find him wherever he aired). Listening to SGSN and its subsequent permutations is how I cut my oldies teeth. I was always drawn to older music and listening to Dick Bartley opened me up to the whole world of oldies. I would be glued to my radio every Saturday night for the entire time enjoying and learning about different oldies nearly every week. Dick always had a fun and educational (at least to an impressionable 13-year old mind) presentation. Even though I have heard that he seems to not have the same energy these days, I still miss not being able to hear him.

So short answer.... Dick Bartley. For sentimental reasons. ;-)

Mike Harvey vs. Bartley

Mike Harvey- it's not even close.

Bartley's been riding the tide for about 10 years (like Dick Clark), sounds uninspired and too casual/matter-of-factly on his show. Harvey takes requests and at least sounds like he's having a blast.

> > Who is Better?

Bartley vs. Harvey

Oh no, I didn't expect that answer. Bartley does have that "matter of Fact" sound. He sounds natural, smooth, and pleasant. Mike Harvey jolts you out of your Seat, every time you hear "I'm Mike Harvey with SUPERGOLD". Mike Harvey would make me 'cringe'!

SuperGold vs. Solid Gold Saturday Night?

In 1985 I was hired by this Radio Network called Transtar, which turned into Unistar, and then became the WW1 Radio Networks. Mike was a Vice President with the Company, and it seemed his sole Job was doing "SuperGold". I actually Duplicated his Reels for Stations that ran the show on tape. In 1986 I took a Part Time Job at the RKO Station in Town, KRTH. My Job was to run "Solid Gold Saturday Night" on Smokin' Oldies AM 930. Bartley's show was twice as good as Harvey's. SuperGold's 'Jingles' were sung by the 'Group', "Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids". Bartley's Jingles & Jingle beds were spectacular, sung by Pams, Jams, or TM. Mike Harvey played old scratched up Records, Bartley played brand new Remastered CD's. I would tell Mike how great this "Solid Gold Saturday Night Show" was, he would just give me a look. During a Month of Rehab in 86, Harvey got the chance to listen to Bartley. I asked Mike what he thought about the Digital Sound, the Jingles, and all the segments Bartley did on his Program, produced by the United Stations Radio Network. Mike just smiled!

Harvey

Mike Harvey is great and he still sounds fresh to me. I've met him about 10 times at Disney MGM many years ago. He's really a great guy in person. He knew me by name back then, but I'm sure he doesn't remember me now. Anyway, my vote is for Mike Harvey.

Re: Harvey

MIke Harvey is a nice guy. He is on a discussion group that I am in, and he loves radio and loves our music. With us, he is one of the guys. No better, no worse.

Is he in a discussion group on this board or another?

Didn't Bartley's show air on the old WKLR 93.1 in Indy?

Bartley on Indiana airwaves

> Didn't Bartley's show air on the old WKLR 93.1 in Indy?

Yes, it did. I don't recall the years it ran, though. Bartley's shows aired on a few different stations over the years. Here is the rundown of where his Saturday night show aired (under its various titles) when I listened (to the best of my recollection):

--WQLK-FM 96.1, Richmond (then a sort of rock/AC format called K-96 which featured oldies blocks weekdays at noon; now country Kicks 96)

--WOKZ-FM 104.9, Muncie (I'd call it AC KZ-105 at the time; aired simultaneously with K-96; after several format changes, is now oldies WERK 101.7/104.9 and airing SuperGold)

--WKLR-FM 93.1, Indianapolis (Oldies 93.1 then--I think they picked it up after dropped by WQLK, someone correct me if I am wrong; later became, of course, WNAP again for several years and now CHR WNOU RadioNow 93.1)

--WGLD-FM 104.5, Indianapolis (Gold 104.5--carried it until they abruptly switched to SuperGold; now, of course, America's 6th JACK-FM station)

Now, it can't be heard within my listening area.

Part of me seems to think it once aired on WFMG-FM 101.3, Richmond during its two year stint as Oldies 101, but I am not sure. Once again, someone correct me if I am wrong. I do know it aired on WOMC-FM 104.3 in the late 80s when I was visiting family in the Detroit area.

I remember it being on QLK, now that you mention it, didn't realize, though, that it ran on the old KZ105.

I think Dick Bartley has a terrific voice for radio! He's very entertaining and informative. I enjoy listening to him on Saturday nights.

They have added it at WQRK 105.5 and WQRJ 102.5 in the Bloomington IN area

You can even visit the official SuperGold Message Board

But it has been broken for a couple years. You can try to send Mike a message on the Site too, however I don't think that works either?

So much for me hearing it anytime soon then. There is no way I could hear it on 102.5 with local 50k WMDH in New Castle on that same frequency. I am sure that WYXB B-105.7 in Indy would make getting 105.5 nearly impossible. :-(
