Mike Huckabee To Launch Radio Show

Bill O'Reilly went on opposite Rush. Bill O'Reilly is no longer on the air.

I foresee this ending the same way.

Cumulus' New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Washington DC, and Detroit stations all carry Rush Limbaugh and carry him live. That's 6 out of their 7 top 10 market stations, as KSFO runs JD Hayworth. If Cumulus expects this show to make any traction, they'll have to stop using all of their most powerful sticks to support a competing show and company. Otherwise this will just be a failed venture. Maybe Cumulus only wants moderate success. Lately these TV hosts with radio shows have been abandoning their radio posts to focus on TV.

FYI: Detroit is actually radio market 11, as noted here as well as how the Top 20 radio market boards on R-I are situated on the dropdown menu...

Bottom line, Cumulus is shooting themselves in the foot right out of the gate by putting Huck on opposite Rush, who's locked up until at least 2016 by Clear Channel. Hannity is vulnerable, why not afternoon drive?

Hannity has the Dickey's in his back pocket. Hannity is vulnerable and his numbers are eroding everywhere. That would have made much more sense...but on the other hand...we are talking about corporate radio decisions and those rarely seem to make sense from where we sit.

Former WABC program director Phil Boyce recently landed at Salem Radio, which owns WNYM-AM and WMCA-AM in New York. Salem's talk radio lineup (Bennett, Gallagher, Prager, Medved, Hewitt) is essentially unchanged since it started, and getting stale - and very ittle syndication beyond Salem's own stations.

I doubt Salem hired Phil away from Talk Radio Network to just babysit the existing lineup. Given his history of success with Rush and Hannity, I suspect Salem is going to be substantially changing their approach in syndicated talk as the opportunities permit.

Not sure if there's anything to this, but dctrv.org wonders if WMAL could run the Huckster and CC
could put Rush on one of its FMs (perhaps even creating a DC or DC/Balt. talk FM). Would 'MAL
pick its own Huck over Rush? Seems far fetched but who knows.

>>One scenario: WMAL could replace Limbaugh with Huckabee at noon, while Clear Channel puts Limbaugh on one of its DC area stations....CC could flip one of its five music-based DC area FMers to talk, maybe classic rock WBIG, 100.3 FM

O.K..... let's stir the pot on this one.

Scenario #1: (not likely, but possible) The presidential race this year is demonstrating that there are various factions within the Republican party. What if the "mainstream party leadership" has had it up to here with some of Rush's "ramblings" and they are ready to see Rush enjoy a well earned retirement. Maybe the party has enlisted a friendly organization to groom a Rush-Replacement.... whether Rush is ready to be replaced or not.

Scenario #2: What if health conditions are going to make it impossible for Rush to continue. Or what if one broadcast group is GUESSING that is the case and they want to decide who the next king-of-talk will be rather than wait for the current syndicator to line up their choice.

Scenario #3; Huckabee has pictures from the Christmas party. ;D

Making SWAG is such cheap entertainment!

Except that Huck & Geraldo are just weekeend warriors on TV. If Fox really thought they were great, they'd expand their TV time or sign them up for their own radio network. The fact that they haven't says a lot.

However, would Huckabee abandon radio for another shot at politics? Never say never.

If I'm not mistaken, Boyce was let go from TRN well before this Salem deal. I think they picked him up off the beach.

Also, Salem's programming is horrible, as demonstrated by their no-sho's in most, if not all markets they're in. Typical of a religious outfit that engages in broadcasting.

@Raccoon: Compare CC's DC situation to New York, where the five FM stations there are actually healthy, even the former format revolving door that was 105.1. That's worth watching, as well...

@Virus: WABC in New York used to carry Coast To Coast until they boarded the "Redeye".

At WABC Boyce had no problem facilitating the endless hours of brokered programming -- in fact he'd refer to the infomercials as "programs" when challenged by callers on "Ask the Program Director." His successor Laurie Cantillo was able to reverse that trend to an extent.

There's no reason to believe Boyce will do anything for Salem other than attempt to give the brokered "programs" some credibility. As Bob Grant might put it, he'll "fold like a cheap camera!"

Have to agree...if he was really doing great things at TRN he would still be there. Masters would put aside his ego and make it work. Not sure that they saw any growth at all with their products while he was there. Salem uses their own products to fill their sticks...the don't worry about quality. If they did then some of their hosts would be long gone. They just don't perform.

Good way to put downward pressure on Rush's next contract. They have a built in replacement if they need him.

They do?

I cannot imagine ANYBODY would consider a wholesale replacement of Rush Limbaugh with (drum roll please...) MIKE HUCKABEE!

You've got to be kidding. Why is anyone discussing this seriously? He is entirely unproven.

He'll likely end up as successful as Fred Thompson.

There is no "next Rush" that will be waiting in the wings. If Rush announced his retirement tomorrow, there would be 30 12-3 shows launched next week.

I meant that stations, have a built in replacement for Limbaugh, someone to replace him in the time slot. KSFO in SF (one of the first conservative stations) let him go so to speak.

Even on FM and AM in Las Vegas, Limbaugh does not do that great.

Limbaugh is becoming kind of weak on the Coasts on the Big Stations.

One thing to consider, which I believe has not been discussed, is that if Cumulus replaces Limbaugh with Huckabee, they will OWN 100 percent of each hour on their largest stations rather than having to give up all those mid-day minutes to Premier. So, perhaps the benefits of owning all the inventory offsets the ratings they get now from Limbaugh. Plus, as long as Limbaugh comes from another network, Cumulus is subject to having the agreement terminated by Premiere (with notice, of course...) On top of all that, the Limbaugh show is not what it once was...
