Mike Jorgenson Obit

I received this over the weekend. I'm omitting the e-mail address of the person handling his charity so she's not spammed to death; if you'd like that information, e-mail me off the board.

Michael Duane Jorgenson, 57, passed away the morning of October 17, 2005 at his home in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico where he has resided since 2002.

Born January 16, 1948 in Hamburg, Iowa, Michael (aka "Jorgy") attended school in Sidney, Iowa until his family relocated to Boulder, Colorado in 1957. An avid sports lover, he was a member of his high school baseball, basketball and football teams at Arvada West High School in Arvada, Colorado.

After completing his education, Michael started a family and a radio career in La Junta, Colorado. The unique combination of his Midwestern upbringing, extraordinary drive, determination, hard work, and uncompromising values catapulted him to an early professional success. Jorgenson’s radio group Sundance Broadcasting owned stations in Phoenix, Boise, and Milwaukee. He was quick to point out though that the things he remembered and valued most in life had never happened around a conference table. One of his favorite personal sayings was, “What good is it to be good with your hands and head if you’re not also good with your heart?”

To those fortunate enough to have known him, Michael was a cherished friend, father, son, and grandfather whose life was a testament of the Golden Rule. His incomparable humility, kindness, generosity, charity and sense of humor will be greatly missed. He is survived by his companion Naomi Lawler, parents Phyllis Johnson of San Diego, California and Don and Dottie Jorgenson of Arvada, Colorado, children Kelly (Chris) Johnson, Tracy (Matt) Kinner, Ryan Jorgenson, and Ashley Jorgenson, and four grandchildren.

A private service celebrating his incredible life will be held in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. You have received this message because your name was found in Michael's rolodex. In lieu of flowers or gifts, those interested in making donations to a charity established by Michael to provide educational opportunities to underprivileged children in Mexico and his hometown of Sidney, Iowa may contact Michelle Matiski at (snip).

The world has undeniably lost an extraordinary human being whose “pay it forward” spirit will live on forever in the hearts of those he touched!

From an original KZON on air peronality...

OMG. I am floored by this and it's months after the fact. Mike was one of the best owners I ever worked for. My only disappointment is that he moved away from the AAA format on ZON. There is STILL a huge hole in this market as a result.

Mike was a great business man, a visionary and a great guy. Man. This hit me between the eyes. He was way too young...
