As we all know, FSN made yet another short-sighted pocketbook decision, and chose to relieve hockey-broadcast legend Mike Lange of his TV duties. Immediately the Penguins said that they were offering him the radio job, and that he'd take a few days to mull it over.
Well, it's been a few days, and I have not seen anything in the local media that indicates whether Lange has accepted or not.
Any news on that front? If he declines, who would be a likely choice to replace him?
Personally I think that Lange has always done his best work on radio anyway. It is an extremely difficult game to capture in words only, and he has always managed to do it especially well. I personally think the Pens broadcasts were much better when it was just Lange at the KDKA microphone with a five-minute newsbreak between periods (way back when he was plugging the Ft. Wayne Cigar Store on the North Side, and telling you to ' go grab an ice-cold Schaefer Beer" at the beginning of each period) Adding more production values certainly has not made the games more enjoyable.
