Mike Lynch.........surprising remark

Last night on the 11:00 PM news, Mike Lynch scornfully referred to Adrian Gonzalez as "Rat" Gonzalez. He was clearly irritated over reports of a secret meeting between Red Sox players and owners. This was strong stuff from him. It took me by surprise. In this era of political correctness and sensitivity, might he be spoken to?

FWIW, I strongly agree with Lynch.

Lynchie has given stronger comments than that over the years so I'm not really surprised. Doubtful there will be any repercussions from station or Red Sox management. Mike Lynch is currently the dean of Boston sports anchors. All of the others can lick his boots.

I guess you're right. He did it again last night..........twice. I'm amazed that someone wasn't offended and demanded an apology. Remember that golf reporter, who jokingly said that the only way to beat Tiger was to lynch him. She was suspended for that. Or when Steve Lyons was fired because he made a joke about a hispanic (Lou Pinnela) stealing his wallet.

It's amazing that Lynch got away with a disparaging remark about a minority.

Not really. You could call anyone a rat and it wouldn't reflect an ethnic stereotype or make light of tragic history (lynching black men). You could argue that Mike's remark isn't PC (so what?) but it's not racist, unlike the other two examples.

There is NOTHING wrong with what Mike Lynch said. I wish everybody would quit screaming racism over every little off-color remark someone says. Not everything said in this world is racist. But then again, people scream racism all the time because it's an easy cop out...and an excuse for not having a legit argument.

Although the other explanation is that another term for "snitcher" or maybe someone who talks behind someone else's back is a "rat.". like the the old James Cagney line "You dirty Rat..."

My point was that it's not what he said but who he said it about. The lynching remark, to me, was not racist. I'm over 60 and have no first hand memories of Black people being lynched. I'd read about it, but it was before my time and certainly before Tiger's and the reporter's. To me, the lynch remark conjured up a mob trying to break into the sheriff's office to lynch a cowboy, who was always white. I'm sure that the poor reporter, who was a friend of Tiger's, meant nothing racist, but it didn't matter, she was still suspended. Why is stealing a wallet confined to Hispanics? Quite frankly, I never knew Lou Pinella was hispanic. I assumed he was Italian.

Some comedian attached a racial connotation to the word Monday. Now saying that word is a problem. This political correctness is becoming Orwellian.

It seems that Lynchie has some pretty good sources. The night he called Gonzalez a rat, he also angrily said that the Red Sox were actively trying to move him. I listen to a lot of sports radio and never heard a word about that, until yesterday.
