Legendary Georgia radio broadcaster Mike McDougald, age 90, of Rome died yesterday. The Statesboro native first spoke into a radio station microphone in 1946 while still in high school. His career included time at WWNS-Statesboro (once owned by his family), WRFC-Athens, WCHK-Canton, WSB-Atlanta (first person to broadcast from White Columns in the 1950s), ownership in Gadsden, Alabama then long time ownership of WRGA(AM)-WQTU(FM), Rome. He was President of the Georgia Association of Broadcasters and after selling the Rome radio stations, served as Chairman of Georgia Public Broadcasting with his most noteworthy accomplishment being the addition of WGPB and WNGH-FM signals to the GPB Radio Network filling huge gap's in the public broadcaster's northwest Georgia coverage area. Mike always had time to talk to a person just starting out in the business and was deeply involved in improving the Rome community. He was a doer and epitomized "community broadcaster."
