MIKE Plays everything, over and over

I hear so many of the same songs over and over on 93.7, I would think a station that plays everything would have a slightly larger library. I admit, though, I do like the station.

When they first went on, we had a little fun with the whole "We play everything" slogan. Hank Williams?
Pavarotti? Dead Kennedys? Stations like Mike do have a bit more variety...and don't confine their sound to just R&B-based or rock-based...they mix in 70s pop, 80s new wave, etc.--the occasional "oh wow" song you haven't heard in awhile. But still while they are "Ipod-based", it's a limited Ipod and there's more than a bit of repetition. But maybe less than other stations.

I do have to laugh, though. The other day I was listening to Oldies 103 and I thought, knowing them they'll
play "Unchained Melody" (Righteous Bros.) next, one of their overplayed songs. Honest to God, it WAS the next song! I have ESP!

I do hear stuff on 93.7 I don't hear elsewhere. Problem is, I hear somethings too often. Like Prince's "Purple Rain." I've heard that three times in a week and a half.

On a recent extended visit to the Boston area, the first song I heard on WODS after turning on the radio for three straight days was the Four Tops' "Can't Help Myself"!

Why does it seem that most "Jack" stations focus on 80s rock-based CHR? Sure, there is some '90s thrown in, but it seems to always revert to the "80s and more" format. :-\

If that's the case, maybe some core demographic they're after. I like the station. I don't like every song & don't know how I'd handle completing a diary but I like the unpredictability. Funny thing is they hit hard on the fact that they have no jocks & no dj talk, but Will Morgan's voice is probably heard more than anyone else in the market even though the breaks are brief. Some of them are lame, but they're intentionally lame. Has anyone noticed if they do any dead segues? I don't think they do but I could be wrong.

Don't know why MIKE got rid of Steve Jones as PD. It sounded like he was doing well. It'll be interesting to see what Ron Valeri does with the station, that is, when his not busy with his pissing match with BCN.

That will be his excuse when WAAF goes down in flames, "I've been working on MIKE's numbers."

trends show mike picking up some steam. Too bad, now they won't dump the concept.

I think it's because programmers think that, as the demographic groups age, these Adult Hits/Variety Hits stations will be like a new type of "oldies" format for the generation that grew up on 80's pop. In many areas of the country (but not in Boston), "Jack", etc... stations replaced the market's prominent traditional oldies station.

Everytime I turn Mike on, it's Whitesnake "Is This Love". It's no longer a rarity!

At times I begin to think their playlist consists OF ONLY 103 songs.

Are you sure they repeat the same stuff over and over? Everytime I listen I tend to hear a fresh mix of music with the occasionally repeat thrown in.

Here is an idea of what I owuld like to see fora typical hour on a Mike type station:

SOS-Rihanna
Ridin' - Chamillionaire
Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
Hey Jude - Beatles
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper
Wannabe - Spice Girls
In The Still of the Night - Five Satins
Hey Ya -Outkast
An Old Fashioned Love Song - Three Dog Night
Promisious - Nelly Furtano
The Twist - Chubby Checker
Satifaction - Rolling Stones
Sorry - Madonna

From what I heard, Entercom didn't get rid of Steve Jones as PD of Mike-FM. Steve chose to leave for a gig in the Caymen Islands and Entercom craftfully positioned the change as their doing.

Mike isn't even on the buttons on our car radio anymore. Perhaps we should give
them another spin? At least this board is good advertising - ok, we'll give MIKE FM
one more chance.

Just checked out the 5-6 hour at yes.com -- Gary Wright's "Dream Weaver" into Def Leppard's "Photograph" into Johnny Lee's "Looking For Love"! That's an, ummmm, interesting set. Who would be familiar with, let alone enjoy, all three songs? (For the record, I know the Wright and the Lee, but not the Leppard, and enjoy only the Lee.)
