Mike Preston Says Adios

After 9 years here in Seattle, I'm headed for San Francisco. I'm proud of what we've done with Kiss 106.1. We are extremely successful financially, with a billing rank well inside the top 10 the last several years (#6 in 05, #5 in '04). We've generated a large audience, and although there are ups and downs, provide a great counter balance to KUBE. Kiss 106.1 will continue to succeed and thrive under whoever occupies this chair next.

Many have criticized us in the past, many don't really understand what mainstream CHR is supposed to be, and there have even been some people who've liked what we did!

I'll remember the amazing launch of the Point, the trials and tribulations of K-Rock, and my good friend and radio brother Jim Trapp allowing me to help strategize & co-create with him what's turning out to be a surprising success, AM 1090. (Yes,I'm the station voice.) And of course, Jim & I signing Jack on in less than 4 hours after getting approval one morning last summer and turning it into another market shaking rocket ride! Thanks to Becky Brenner at KMPS for the great recruitment job, and dinner at Azteca! And to my former ABC pal, KOZK's Carey Curelop, who has often both sought and given great counsel and been a great collaborator on some of the fun we've had the last decade. And to Jackie & Bender, Marcus D, Marc Jones, Jeff Connell and my entire Kiss staff go a huge thanks for being the best.

It's been fun lurking and watching this board over the last few years. There's been a lot of comedy, especially when it comes to the inner workings of the stations & clusters around the market. The morning show salary wars, the format flips (or not!), the good radio and the bad.

The Bay Area is my home, so after 29 years in this business, I'm finally getting my dream, and two pretty amazing stations to work with to boot. I've made so many great friends at CBS Seattle over the last almost a decade, so you know I'll be keeping tabs on them from SF. Who knows, now that I'll be an "outsider", maybe I'll chime in on the board.

Thanks again to all. I'll miss my weekly lunch at Jalisco near the Key. (The original, not the karaoke bar!)

Good luck to you Mike! Glad that you're able to fulfill your dream. Thanks for all of your help with everything. We will miss you in Seattle.

lots of luck to you mike and thank you for the stations that you brought along (namely the point and jack fm)

Best of luck to you, Mike. I still remember when you came to town and I has phrased a "welcome message" on another board (All Access) so incredibly poorly that you read it as an insult!! Have felt so bad about that all these years as it really was my intention to genuinely welcome you to the Northwest. So, I hope the "goodbye" comes across much more clearly! Been a great span of time in-between!

PS..maybe I'll see ya at one of Rivers' future parties in LA!

Please do something with that horrible imaging on KFRC! It needs to be thrown away! The music is very good though! How about some real nightime personalities that sound alive and communicate with the audience already! Too bad CBS didn't let you program Free-FM. Now there is a "real challenge" for anyone in the business and would be a real feather in your cap to be able to make it succeed!
Good Luck with the challenge given though!

Overall, even though I've never met you personally, I think you did a pretty good job. At least we know what format will be on 96.5 20 minutes from now. And 1090? It's beating the Rush Limbaugh station. For the first time in a decade, 1090 has a respectable size audience....

Good work Mike!

You did a great job of getting Kiss on track and keeping it going through tumultuous times in Contemporary Music.

I'm glad you got a job in a place you like.

Best of luck to you, Mike.

Mike will resurrect KFRC

He's a pro and will find a way to restore the luster to the legendary KFRC.
