Mike rhyner re-signs with KTCK

Great story. Glad they came to terms and are staying. I wonder if he will regret saying "They have a whole lot going for them which we just don't have," he says of The Fan"........

I don't think he will regret saying what he said about The Fan. They do have a ton of assets. It makes the "little" Ticket the underdog again. I think Mike gets that. I think he also did the right thing. Gavin Spittle and David Henry have shown that regardless of funds, they can screw up just about anything.

Other than the Cowboys and a big stick what exactly are their assets? Ben & Skin? A morning show that talks even LESS sports than The Ticket does?

"Other than the Cowboys"???? Not so fast! They don't have them YET...and don't count out others like Citadel and ESPN quite so fast. There are many negotiations happening and don't be surprised if it's April before a rightsholder is announced.

You're right, I was being a tad bit presumptuous. Scratch one off the list of assets. I wouldn't be surprised if Rhyner used the negotiations as a way to keep Cumulus from totally screwing the station up in the name of the blessed beans they love to count.

Jones will sign with the fan ..no big secret. Talks are underway. In two years to 3 years Valley ranch will move its operations to the new stadium as well..surprise,,you heard it first. As for R......no big surprise there as well.

Glad the Hardline is staying put. Now I dont' have to change my presets. :p I'll put 105.3 back on when and if they get the Pokes. But I'll only listen to the games. I'm not interested in what B&S have to say. I gave them a good long chance to entertain me and they failed. How can two guys on a guy talk sports show sound so dead and boring? ???

I hope that Jerry does sign with the Fan. because I want to see TMS sue CBS for breaking their contract. TMS has, by all reports, an absolutely iron-clad contract with 105.3 to run Nascar, and from what I'm told, TMS has absolutely NO interest in letting CBS out of that contract.

The Fan may be home for all of Jerry's sales-driven shows at night, but look for the games on another property.

And if you don't think I'm right answer this. Why the wait? KTCK announced a few weeks ago that they weren't going to be back. If you're the Fan, why not get out there NOW and start using that to promote your station, start positioning your station NOW as the home of the Cowboys? Why not get out there NOW and start selling your ads, packages, sponsorships, etc. The longer they wait, the more likely marginal clients will find other places to spend that money. (And yes, there will always be SOME clients (beer, Ford, etc) that will wait, but not all will...)

Quick question.....any possible way Cowboys go back to the Cumules if they can't get what they want from The Fan, ESPN, etc......Just wondering if that door is completely shut?

I've said it before and I'll say it again... Gavin Spittle is an IDIOT and I am really surprised that he can feed himself... Dear Gavin, Please go back to Vegas or Boston. You don't have a clue! :-* Perhaps you should try a market more your "speed" like Meridian, MS (300) or Casper, WY (301). Wait - that would be an insult to those markets... ::)

Little 1, you are spot on. Spittle and Henry, the brain dead duo in Dallas have messed this one up so bad, it could make ones head spin. I bet David Henry is telling Jerry Jones that he has an out with TMS. And I bet Jones couldn't care less. CBS will overpay for the Cowboys, as they did numerous times in the 90's. Jerry doesn't care. His money comes from TV, ticket sales, merch, hospitality and in stadium sponsorship...Cowboys Radio is a very minor part of Cowboys revenue...and if Jerry gets to screw up TMS in the process, I don't think that would bother him too much. Nice loyalty Spittle and Henry, job well done. Let's add this to your list of achievements (written on a matchbook).

Are you sure TMS has the deal with 105? Isn't the broadcasting rights with MRN rather than a local track or is it more complicated than that?

There is no guarantee that CBS will pay a straight rights fee. Thats why the Cowboys left CBS three years ago. Jones wanted 5-8 million a year and CBS did not want to pay it. So Jones strikes up a deal with Cumulus Media to give all the inventory to the Cowboys. I will say it again as I have said in the past: What does The Great Jerry Jones want to do? Straight Rights Fee or Owning the rights. Business wise, it makes more sense for the Cowboys to own their radio rights and package that along with signage and other co-marketing deals with the new stadium.

Problem I see here is, who wants to pay top dollar for the rights to broadcast Cowboy games, when the team itself is in the pits and has been for several years now? Even season ticket holders for Texas Stadium, are bailing on the same tickets at Jerry's new playground. I'm almsot ready to put Jones in the same rank as Henry & Spittle.

The story that I'm told is that TMS is paying CBS to air the races. And we're talking serious, SERIOUS money. Not dollar a holler infomercial money, but major money.

And that with all that money they're paying CBS, they also have a 2 (or 3 my source isn't sure) year contract that they are in the middle of.

The race audio itself may come from MRN, my understanding is that TMS is paying CBS for the airtime, so it doesn't really matter where the audio comes from, the contract is between TMS and CBS.

And if CBS breaks it, they're liable for damages.

(And caveat- I could be completely wrong. My sources could be completely misguided. But 105.3 was running all those races (not just the 2 Texas ones) for a reason. While they could have been running more mortgage or home improvement shows. It makes sense that TMS would want a contract so they wouldn't get bumped...

And 105.3, especially pre-meltdown would want a contract. It insured easy money for a steady stream of weekend programming that they don't have to go out and sell, deal with clients, etc etc

The 'evidence' fits the scenario that we have...Or in other words, If there's NOT a contract, why the long delay in announcing the Cowboys? )

Frankly I don't get why any radio station would broadcast car racing audio. Car racing is a visual sport. Take for example the ten car pileup at the Daytona 500. How do you emphasize how bad that was, on the radio? The missing picture devoids all meaning.

Agreed.
But if you're the "sport" and create a situation where your sponsors spots are heard in multiple markets, and you 'the sport' can figure out a way to monetize that, you create a situation where it's worth paying stations to air your races.

Much like Jerry, if NASCAR can sell "cross-platform" sponsorships- you get a race named after you, signage at the tracks, TV commercials, radio commercials, etc etc, you can get more money in a lump, than trying to get it individually.
Contrast Nascar saying "Hey Home depot, for 10 million you get A B C D" versus Home depot trying to figure out 'okay 7 million to sponsor a car or just 5, amybe 6, , 2 millon on TV or shoudl we spend 3, should we spend 2 million on radio and none on signage, or a million each on signage and radio?
