Mike Salk leaving 710

Wow, so maybe that ad on the Bonneville employment site wasn't for Calabro's position but rather Mike Salk's.
On the Boston board it's being reported that long time WEEI afternoon drive host Glenn Ordway has been sent packing which is
a HUGE move!
In his place comes Mike Salk, the Boston native whom reports say WEEI has been hot after for some years now.
If this all is true then good for Salk, I think he does a tremendous job on KIRO and he gets to go back home to anchor afternoon drive on a legendary station in WEEI that will need all of his professionalism to help get them back on track ratings wise and to deal with the backlash of callers who are loyal to Ordway.

He was the only sports talk host that I could actually listen to for more than 5 minutes. Except I had to listen to Brock Huard blather on until Salk cut him off.

He replaces a legend in Boston in Glenn Ordway who was a long time Celtics announcer and for years was the afternoon drive personality on WEEI hosting "The Big Show".
The one thing that works in his favor is that he's a Bostonian, worked in the market for a while on some ESPN signals in Boston though they were very small, weak ones.
He knows the teams, fans and how to connect with the fans there and it's a great opportunity for he, his wife and daughter to be around their families & friends
I'll miss hearing Mike in Seattle but this is a GREAT hire for WEEI who's been getting beat continually by the Sports Hub for some time now.

I've been listening to Brock and Salk since day one. My reaction to Salk's departure is mixed.

On the one hand, I enjoyed that he brought an outside perspective to things. Seattle sports radio has been dominated for a long time be either people from here or people who've been here so long it really doesn't matter. And not only did Salk bring that perspective, he wasn't afraid to talk about more than just the local teams.

On the other hand, that game show crap really annoyed me. You do game shows on sports radio to kill time on overnight shows, not on a morning weekday show in a major market. And in recent months Brock and Salk had become a show that tended to focus on one thing day after day, sometimes for weeks. Yes, the Seahawks were a big story this year but we can talk about other things too.

It will be very interesting to see how KIRO changes with first Calabro and now Salk out the door. Brock is the only guy left from their original launch. Huard clearly needs a partner, and I'd suggest they have a nice fit in house already in Bob, who I don't feel meshes well with Groz. I wonder if we will see something like the old KJR lineup where Groz does middays and then transitions to Gas, maybe with Moore as a sidekick for Groz to cover on the days he isn't around. I bet Steve Sandmeyer is wondering if doing the afternoon gig at 1090 was the best move now?

Nothing lasts forever - especially in radio. I've felt 710 has been one of the more entertaining stations in the market since the beginning. And I'm not even a huge sports radio guy - but with so many music stations using canned or VT'd "talent" and minimal fun quotient, I turned to sports. With all these changes - losing some heavy hitters - the station is really losing steam fast. I wish Calabero and Salk well ... but I'm kind of bummed.

Salk officially announced his departure today. Not leaving until the end of the month, though. No word on who will replace him.

Interestingly, Huard said that they tested him with 8 or 9 other people (mostly local) back before 710 flipped to sports and that he (Huard) told them he thought he had the least chemistry with Salk.

To update this, Danny O'Neil will now be co-hosting with Huard 9-12. O'Neil is leaving the Seattle Times completely and will also write for the MyNorthwest.com website. You could see that O'Neil was being groomed to be the "lead" the last several weeks as he appeared regularly on the afternoon show, as well as filling in on other shows.

What is interesting is where this leaves the afternoon show, which was mostly Jim Moore, O'Neil, and Dave Wyman. It raises the question of whether they are willing to let Moore actually be the afternoon drive guy or if they are getting ready to bring someone else in (Gas?).

Why not just hire The Gas Man? Problem solved!

He might be getting paid out on a non-compete, plus there's always the possibility he doesn't want to do it right now.

IIRC Grosby was off 3-4 months before he came back at KIRO, so we are pretty much at that point now with Gas. It is possible that something will happen soon, though. I have a hard time believing Moore can really headline the afternoon drive, but with the Mariner season ongoing that show will be pre-empted a lot anyway so maybe they aren't in any rush.
