Mike Savage hurling gay slurs on RKO

What amazes me is that "nappy headed ho" gets so much play, but when Mike Savage, at 9:41 PM on WRKO, says to his producer "Play the Swish, Johnny Mathis" prior to a hate-filled anti-gay rant about the Boy Scouts
and San Francisco and lesbian San Francisco police officers and a lesbian senator allegedly driving while on medication - do ten wrongs make it right?

Maybe if Don Imus just continued the slur and called everyone a nappy headed ho, from George W. Bush to
American Idol contestants, that would make it right and Imus would still be on the air?

They played "Chances Are" and yanked it because Savage "wasn't in the mood". Perhaps he is in a more
casual mood off the air.

Terrible radio. This is what Jason Wolfe is force-feeding Massachusetts on a Thursday night?

Where's Ed Schultz or something that makes more sense?

You had me until "Ed Schultz"

Joe - if you don't like Savage, don't listen to him!
He's always going on about the people of San Francisco, his adopted home town, how morally bankrupt he thinks the politicians are out there.
His schtick is to always be upset about something. That's the game. If he bugs you, switch the station.

Boston/Re: Mike Savage hurling gay slurs on RKO

Michael Savage suffers from small "Weiner" syndrome ;)

Yeah, I know what you mean. Just the other day I tuned to WEEI and they were, get this, discussing sports. Talk about getting blindsided!

Savage is well-known for his dislike of homosexuals. The most famous incident in his entire life was when he got blown out of his television gig for a bizarre, out of control, over-the-top, attack on a homosexual caller.

But, you listen to this crap like you're the field rep for GLAAD. You even have the exact time memorized, when most of us can't remember what we had for lunch. Ok, we get it.

There must be forty-plus listenable signals coming into Boston at night that don't carry Savage. Find one.

Regards,
TSB

If you are a Sox listener you have RKO on the preset - Savage is an unnecessary byproduct of being a sports fan scanning the buttons...he was playing a bunch of early 60s music so I listened a bit. He's useless. Something else would be a better fit and as I've said on another thread - The Boston Red Sox should have some say over what is transmitted on the airwaves they broadcast from.

Michael Savage's real name is Weiner which may explain everthing ;)

He makes his money by outraging. On the left side, there's Rosie O'Donnell and her conspiracy theories etc.
Obviously a sponsor boycott could be organized; hit 'em where it hurts.

""Savage's brand of over-the-top bile...puts him right in there with the angriest haters on the Left..."
--Bernie Goldberg

Son Russell Weiner ran unsuccessfully for office and then created Rockstar energy drink.

The caller on the MSNBC show btw may not have necessarily been gay. He was a prankster called
East Coast Bob that called in when Savage was talking about airlines and gave a plug to
talk hosts Don and Mike and said Savage had bad teeth. Savage proceeded to call him a
sodomite, saying "You should just get AIDS and die, you pig." It was a prankster who, like
Savage, was out to get attention.

One Chick Dishing at the "post-Imus" environment...Leslie Gold & producer Paul Butchie Brennan
are gone from WFNY (now WXRK) NY (formerly at WRKO with 2 Chicks Dishing)

---------------------------------------------------
"Free FM in N.Y. has flipped formats to music," wrote former afternoon host Gold on her blog Thursday afternoon. "That's how it goes in radio, one day your [sic] employed, the next day you aren't. I was told the decision to flip was a result of low revenues, a series of many poor management decisions made over many months and a post-Imus environment that doesn't allow talk shows like the ones on Free FM to do what they need to do to get ratings ... that is talk about race, sex and other potentially offensive and provocative material. I'm not telling you this, this is what I was told."
---------------------------------------------------

East Coast Bob got a bunch of emails about the Savage incident. here's one:

>> Bob Foster,
You did nothing wrong. Savage, per himself, is an expert who knows more than
any other talk show host. If this is correct, he should have had more control,
more professionalism to handle the call in the lighhearted manner in which it
clearly was intended. I'm a conservative who is ashamed of Savage. He clearly sounds like someone
who is on the verge of a breakdown

Watch the clip; note that the caller was just doing a prank and dropping the name of another
talk show in and making fun of Savage's teeth. He could have replied, "OK, smarty, at least I
HAVE teeth" or something like that but he went into "You're one of those sodomites" etc.
(East Coast Bob, playing along with it, said "Yes I am" but the conversation had nothing to
do with gays at that point. It was Savage who brought that part up, not the caller.)

He's shock value and somehow has caught on. I prefer Ingraham during that slot when there's
no Sox game.

Bob, comparing Rosie's political views with bashing a minority group is ridiculous. I've said it before, I'll say it again, ANYONE can say something over the top, have a "bi Friday" (imagine the outrage if a host played sounbites from Boris Karloff's "Black Friday" and was condescending to any one group by exploiting them shamelessly), that doesn't take talent.

Real talent is being able to be quick, witty, and generate humor and interest without crossing the line.

What place in our culture do "Metco Gorilla", "Nappy Headed Ho", the aforementioned Sodomite routine, or sexually attacking Condoloeeza Rice have? It nullifies, or at least mitigates, the real issue regarding "Dr. Rice",
her complicity in a war for oil. Until the shills stop deflecting the real issues, we will be stuck in neutral debating gay bashing, ethnic bashing, and a horrific April Fool prank concerning Mayor Menino. There are more important issues in life. These "talk radio hosts" could care less about those topics.

Varulven,

What is dead obvious is all these people saying 'change the station' have NEVER had to endure the kind of verbal assaults that you, black folks, women, and immigrants have to endure. Their grandparents did, of course, but not them. And, they would simply not stand for it if they did - a couple of comments from Rosie O'Donnell and Bill Maher and they're freaking out - what would they do if they had to listen to the venimous poison from (Savage) Weiner, Severino(r) et al - well, who knows.

Let's ask them. If all the talk stations had people saying equivalent things about you guys - what would you do? Quietly change the station like good, obedient boys?

P.S. I have said it before and I'll say it again - I predict that (Savage) Weiner will be diagnosed with a slow-growing brain tumour that has affected his personality.

Obedient boys? Come on it's a talk show. Some people like it some don't short of taking out his advertisers you can do nothing about it. So , if he hurts you so with his little words form a group and take him out. Until then when you hear Savage turn him off. No need to get all crazy about it, same goes for the anti-Rosie and Mahr nut jobs. Do not like it? Turn it off.

Hopefully there won't be a double standard in all this. Check out the following cartoon: is it racist?
Naaaah, can't be, because Condi is a conservative and thus it's OK, right?

http://www.dinocrat.com/archives/2004/10/12/condi-rice-dont-know-nuthin-bout-birthin-no-babies

How about the liberal blog that put a Jewish-American U.S. Senator in blackface? Evidently that was OK,
too, as he was supporting the war (apparently people forgot at one time he was Al Gore's
running mate). (And for those who accuse the Right of racism, just take a look at some of the vicious
hate mail Filipino-American conservative commentator Michelle Malkin got...)

http://www.diggersrealm.com/mt/archives/000621.html

Surely you are a big put-on. Did some minor Republican operative purchase a mail-order bride and train her to do this? * * * Malkin, you're a dumb (expletive) whore. You're a philipino piece of (expletive) who should be wiping my (butt). Go back to the massage parlor. (Bleep bleep) long time.

Economic boycotts are fine and it works both ways. It can be religious folks promising a boycott of
Pepsi because they found the ad (based on the video) with Madonna's "Like a Prayer" offensive, too.
Not that such boycotts/protests always work. Sometimes they backfire. "Married With Children" and
"Last temptation of Christ" were protested but the protests actually gained them more viewers
(got them publicity and people checked them out).

Shortly before Rosie was taken off The View there was a petition online saying people would boycott
the show and its advertisers. When Rosie was taken off, the guy who started the petition said actually
he wasn't happy with the results--what he WANTED was for Rosie to be confronted about her positions
and to discuss them with the other side (and the token conservative on the show, Elizabeth
Hasselbeck, did wind up confronting Rosie recently...)

The Red Sox don't own the license for WRKO. Entercom does. It's their call. Deal with it.

No, the only thing that's dead obvious is that you don't know what you're talking about. Since nearly everyone here posts under a pseudonym, you don't know who we are, what our backgrounds are, what life-experiences we've had or what kind of verbal assaults we've had to endure.

As for me, I've been called a Christ-killer, a horned devil, the murderer of Dr. King, a purveyor of pornography, an owner of slaves and other filth more vile than you can possibly imagine. Words. That's all they are. If I let them get to me, then those who are small enough to throw them at me have won...and I won't give them the satisfaction. If words upset you that much, get help.

Although I think the deal Entercom made with the Red Sox gave the team the option of buying the station,
IIRC...but as for right now, it indeed is in Entercom's hands. The Red Sox COULD put pressure on 'RKO
if they felt they didn't want to be associated with a show like that, much like advertisers could put
pressure on the station (or listeners of course).
