Mike Selden's "I Hate"

Does anyone recall a parody song from 1974, a spoof of Tom T. Hall's "I Love"? (You know, "I love/ little baby ducks/old pick-up trucks/slow-moving trains/and rain...")Seems like Mike Selden at KVIL came up with one called "I Hate." All I can recall is a part that said, "I hate/wives when they nag..."Anybody?

I remember many of the things MS did on the radio from my childhood; notably the Great Race with Ralph in 1974...Didn't MS pass away a few years back?

It's interesting that you bring this up. I have a Tom T Hall song called Dolly Parton's tits. Does anyone know who recorded this song? It kind of sounds like him, but they have several different voices under each other.

Selden passed on in 1997. Addictions, asthma and, later, weight issues, caught up with him. He lived a lot of life in his short 52 years. The Great Race was a great piece of radio. Probably was the first big event that really drew some serious attention to KVIL, and to the FM band.

Yes,that was radio then. Mike was a great talent, and its ashame the drugs, etc got in the way. He did do a good thing in his later years and tried to help others turn away from drugs.

the REST of the story....

I don't recall Selden doing that but it surely would be right up his alley!Trivia about Tom T. Hall's version of "I Love" ( a crossover country/pop hit in late 1973)...The original version had a line that said "...I love.. burbon in a glass, and....grass."Bunches of stations complained and wouldn't play that version because they thought he was referring to marijuana. Mercury Records re-cut the line changing it to "...old TV shows, and snow."As for Selden's death, the family personally told me drugs played no role in his death. At the time of his death, he had been out of radio for a good while and working as a counselor at a rehab center for troubled teens in East Texas. As he told me, helping others was the only way he could stay straight himself. He also said just weeks before his death, in a conversation with me, that he wanted to try to get a gig doing weekends back in Dallas on the air. It never happened of course. Another note on the Great Race at KVIL between Chapman and Selden. Few knew, but it was decided ahead of time that Ron would win arriving to fanfare of newpaper photographers and TV mini-cams at the airport gate. Selden got a flight attendant to tell the pilot of his plane about what was going on. They invited him to the cockpit (yes they did that in those days). Selden talked them into getting the plane in ahead of schedule which they did. Selden walked into the media frenzy and when Ron walked out the race was all over and he lost, much to his surprise. I don't think Ron ever forgot that. The tales of the Chapman / Selden rub are legendary, ultimately resulting in Mike leaving in early 1978 and having his career essentially spiral out of control to its ultimate demise. What many don't know is Selden did approach Ron years later at a function in Tyler and basically tried to "make good". Mike told me he thought they really had a classic love/hate relationship.

When I first discovered the radio, I was about 11 and started listening to Mark Stevens and Larry Shannon over on KFJZ and KXOL. Then I discovered being the right caller and winning things on the radio, then I discovered FM radio and in early 1974 started listening to KVIL. I would listen to Mike Selden; loved calling him and requesting songs and listening to him. Then I was in Dallas and and I saw Ron Chapman at a restaurant in Dallas; I was about 12 and I told Ron I loved listening to KVIL. He was really busy at the time; but took time to say thanks and hoped I would listen. Being the tacky teenager I was, I said I like Mike Selden better and Ron gave me this go-to-hell look. Soon after The Great Race started; DFW Airport was in its infancy and round-the-world-travel was still a foreign concept in these parts. I loved following it on the radio. That was great radio. I was sorry to hear about Mike's death and am glad he was able to make peace with the whole thing. And I can't forget Jack Schell - I know he's not doing radio but I always loved his humor. It was weird like mine.

Steve,Great story!Btw...please ignore whoever is posting under CatboxDim Prewitt. He's bitter because the new people here got wind of all his negative drivel under KPLEXCOMPLEX/EDWARD R. Murrow. He even posted about Seldon taking drugs. This guy has no soul.Hey call me sometime. Let's catch up!

I have a Michael Selden story, as well. In the early 80s, when Selden was working at KPLX and KLIF, I realized that he might be leaving town in the near future, so I began making a "double dozen" airchecks of him. I telescoped the airchecks, and put them on both sides of a 90 minute cassette. You can get a copy of those telescoped Selden airchecks on CD now from Mike Shannon at KNUS99FM. com A few years after I'd make the original cassette, I happened to be talking with Lynne Haley on the KVIL request line. I mentioned Michael Selden, and she had never heard of him. I sent her a copy of the cassette, and she got back with me and said that it was a good tape.At any rate, a couple of weeks later, my home phone rang, and it was Michael Selden! Some KVIL DJs had shared the tape with each other, and he'd heard about it.It's always kind of cool when a radio DJ calls me at home, because it seems kind of like the "opposite" of when I call them on the request line.

I never met Mike Seldon but I'm sure he was superior to any of today's liner-reading pretenders who only know the word "creativity" from Websters. Radio jocks suck in today's 2006.

You might be thinking of "The Dolly Parton Song" by Doc Wesson. It's on his cd "Tacky Tunes From Texas".

I think that parody was done by "The Geezenslaw Brothers",a couple of guys out of Austin.I believe one of the guys was named Sammy Allred and I don't remember the other fella.Hope this helps, for that matter I hope I'm right.Good Luck!

Well, that doesn't make any sense now..... as any reference to "snow" could mean cocaine.... So that would get the nix too..... :)

One more Selden thing to do...

I was just remembering one of my fav Selden bits...he did it on KLIF in the early 70's.It had hit 100 degrees one afternoon and he put the phone on the air and started dialing. While it was ringing he said "trust me this will be a phone call from hell"...and sure enough it was. He called the Post Office in Hell, Michigan and asked them what the tempreture was that day in Hell. They said something like 83 degrees and he said, "yeah, well in Dallas it is now 100 degrees and I just want to confirm for certaintly that it now is 'hotter than hell'" to which the lady said, "yes sir, in Dallas it is now officially hotter than hell". Selden then says "you little devil" and hits the jingle! I copied the bit one time when I worked at KLUV and it was one of my fav airchecks.
