MIKE SIGEL - 1300 KKOL DELAY, POWER, AND POSSIBLE BOOSTER OPERATIONS

Someone called me in Nevada from Seattle to tell me that Mike Siegel is back on 1300 KKOL.

It was 10pm so I tried tuning into KKOL, w/ success!

However there was a delay of a half second - between what I heard on MY radio - and what I heard by way of THEIR radio on MY cell phone.

Could this mean that their repeater in Redmond is now in operation, and that it's delayed from the main towers in Tacoma?

I don't know from what location this person would receive a stronger signal, since I don't know the wattage of the repeater.

A delay of 1/2 second over any kind of streaming media is pretty damn good if you ask me.......

Just be thankful he's not on FSN, "Home of the Perpetual Eight-Second Delay." Next time you want to watch a Mariners game and listen on the radio...

I've heard the booster facility was a dud. Didn't work...

Why not? Was it at the very least well Northeast of the 5mV/m contour that probably runs through lake washington somewhere ?

Was it intended for daytime, or nightime, or both ?

Are they operating at 25kW dir 4 towers or 50kW ?

I don't really know the specifics - but in my experience same-frequency AM booster stations are very tough to engineer. It also could have been a result of budget cuts - why spend more money on a station that yields little revenue? Most broadcasters are cutting expenses, not growing revenue so this shouldn't surprise anyone.

It is nice to see that 1300 has at least one obsessed loyal listener!

AM sync (aka booster) stations anymore are considered "experimental" in status, with the commission usually requiring a station to file monthly or quarterly reports. They are not long-standing licenses like full class or FM translators. The problem with AM on-channel sync stations are the problem with syncing the oscillators to GPS, delay the audio so it matches perfectly, and there is always an area where the main and booster beat against each other. Usually the station looks for an area that could tollerate the overlap area between the booster and main. I somehow doubt that there is anywhere between Tacoma and Seattle that could be considered a useless area where the overlap would be okay.

Like Jackson said, right up there with hiring John Curley for mornings (I found that particularly funny), somehow I don't think Salem has enough cash in the piggy bank to spend money on an experimental sync booster for one AM station.
