Mike Stevens returns to DRC-FM

Looks like Mike Stevens is back at DRC-FM, as the 7-midnight jock, replacing Scott Michaels. His bio is up on the website and all references to Michaels are gone. He's also doing the 3-7 p.m. Saturday shift -- meaning he's on as I write -- following Grahame Winters, who's apparently going to alternate in the Saturday 10-3 slot with Larry Wells. Stevens' return was handled on-air in classic DRC style. Winters ended a song set around 2:45 and said "coming up next, after a long absence ..." Then a gravelly, obviously faked voice said, "Hi! This is Dick Robinson, and..." Winters, laughing, quickly said "It's Mike Stevens! I was gonna say we should have brought you a cake and served it in the 'Big D Big Lounge,' " but I guess we're not that anymore!" Stevens: "Man, it's Old Home Week around here. Who's on after me? Joey Reynolds?" (I'd imagine most of this exchange went right over the heads of non-radio-history buffs and people who haven't been listening to the station (AM or FM) for at least 30 years, but as one of the former group, I enjoyed it -- and the choice of John Sebastian's "Welcome Back" as the last song in Winters' shift.)So what's the story here? Settlement of a lawsuit? Change of heart by management? Did Michaels get a better job elsewhere? I must admit, I grew to like his show quite a bit over the past few months -- he's not an oldies geek like some of the other jocks at the station, but he was always enthusiastic on-air and seemed to have a great rapport with his listeners. So once again, DRC-FM reaches into its past to make a change. Old music dumped and brought back, and now old jock dumped and brought back.

Personally I like Mike Steves over Scott. I thought he had a better on-air delivery and didn't "force" his delivery. There's all sorts of speculation of why they brought him back. Maybe it's an attempt to try to get back some of the listeners they drove away with all the formatics flip flopping they've done. Personally, it would be nice if they would get a clue on how to get their audio to be better and more consistant (which is another DRC-FM subject I've beaten in the past in these forums).Bill

Thats too bad about Scott Michaels leaving the station, I really thought he did a nice job. I am happy to hear about the return of Mike Stevens to the station though. Personally I would love to hear Mike back in the mornings. He and Beth at least had something resembling a chemistry. Baby steps I guess. First, nights and then we'll see.

Yes, I thought the Mike and Beth duo was much better. John Seville sounds like he's just too full of himself (this may not be stated correctly, but it just doesn't sound natural like Mike & Beth did). It makes it much easier for me to listen to something else iin the morning.

Scott Michaels has been tapped to do mornings at 96.7 The Coast. When he'll start, I don't know. I also heard he'll be going by a differnt name..."Kellog"? It's nice to get some new blood into mornings in Ct. Good luck to Scott. I hope he gets to really do a morning show, not just play music with the occasional traffic and weather thrown in..

OT: I would only imagine the Coast morning show getting dismissed by many, espeically of those who habitually listen to WEBE or Star99.9. It will probably be the test to see if Cox really screwed the pooch on changing the format! I'm betting Coast is just going to flounder.I still wish they'd put Mike back with Beth - it would almost make me tolerate listening to the cummy audio on DRC-FM!BillBTW: Is has anybody heard DRC-FM's HD signal? Does it sound as crappy as the main channel or what?

I couldn't agree more. I would love for someone to come in and do something different. In my opinoin, Ct. mornings are there for the taking. Nothing I'm hearing is really knocking me out, and the same generic shows are winning by default. It seems that a station would rather take a chance and go with a syndicated show with a track record (Stern, for example) than to let a local show take some chances. I hear that a Citadel station In New London may be going to Opie and Anthony in the mornings, so stations that have an audience in the eastern part of the state will have to worry about this rumor now. But i digress, good luck to scott Michaels. As stated in a previous post, I hope he's not some chip in a misguided plan

Re: Scott Michaels.

I don't know if anyone covered this, but before coming to WDRC-FM... where did Scott work?

As I recall, his DRC-FM bio page just said he'd worked at "several stations" after graduating from Ithaca College before "coming home to Connecticut." He must have used other airnames on those gigs, because his past is a big question mark in his profile on the wdrcobg.com tribute site as well.As a listener, I think he'll be a much better fit in a contemporary format like the Coast. He did some very entertaining phone work on his DRC show (I recall a really funny bit with a carload of giggly teenage girls cruising through Meriden who wanted to hear "I'm a Believer"; you could tell they'd seen his photo on the website, because there was a lot of flirting going on) but you could kind of sense that an oldies format wasn't really where he wanted to be.

I think this is a great opportunity for DRC to bring back the fun radio it had on its AM side back in the 70's. (Remember John Larabee??) Mike & I were in the same broadcasting school class quite a while ago. He's quite a talent. Not only is he quite the joker, he also plays a great straight man, too. He even has a great imitation package. (Maybe we might hear him do his Jerry Kristafer imitation someday. If he does, I guarantee you will be ROFL!)Regards,DJ Jim Wayne

i'd LOVE to hear Mike setevens imitate Jerry .. that'd be a hoot!
