its too bad that steve fullerton died a coulpe of years ago. he was terrific in afternoon drive on 3we1100 with his george(hero) and billy(goat) awards.

as far as reformatting 1260 as a talker, bring back the wbbg calls rather than wixy. try this:

5a-denny shafer
9a-glenn beck
noon-bill cunningham
3p-bob frants drive time sports
7p-hannity
10p--jaz mckay
2a-bubba bozo-live trucking show
add a first class news team to do local reporting(NOT METRO!!!!!)
pick up abc-information, usaradio or westwood NBC news for national stories
add weather channel weathercasts on the 15s
make use of metro to do traffic since they do it best nationally
develop local talent to run 3 hour talk shows on weekends
add click and clack, the car repair brothers on saturday mornings
add plant talk for the gardeners on saturday mornigs at8
do high school sports in a HUMUNGOUS way
have a local crew do LIVE rotating church of the week services on sunday mornings
in short, a FULL SEVICE TALK station--david52258

As in leave WLW, or syndicate regionally?

> 3p-bob frants drive time sports

Doesn't Triv and KNR cover this angle?

> add weather channel weathercasts on the 15s

Or do this on 850, get back the WJW calls (or atleast WWJW) and have FOX 8 do weather.

> make use of metro to do traffic since they do it best

Rick Abell... the best traffic guy in a market this size you'll find

> do high school sports in a HUMUNGOUS way

Skip sports completely and run liners, "News around the clock, even during a ballgame!"

billy, the original real american, has begun to syndicate his show.

frantz know what he is talking about on sports, triv prefers to talk about italian food, texas hold-em, weird sky markings, and school-tax funding. he is upset with most of the pro cleveland teams for various reasons. roadman likes to talk about "mens clubs/entertainers" rather than pro sports. for reasons explained on another thread, knr won't give scores on an in-progress tribe game.

abell got burned by cc over at "world domination hq on oaktree". he may be reluctant to go back to radio from action19.
as far as weather, if you can get andre bernier--great. goddard is reaching retirement consideration, and the rest of fox8 weather, other than andre, are nowhere near as knowledgeable.

if wixi or some combo involving wjw is available, that would be great.

suggestions to add on weekends would include michael reagan and boom boom cannon.--david5258

Mr. Cunningham's syndication effort is history...he pulled the plug himself, citing health issues with his family. (His wife, if I recall right.) He managed to pick up about a half-dozen stations, as I recall.

I may be one of the few people who remembers Mr. Cannon's midday stint on WHLO/640 in Akron in the mid-70's. He's been doing late nights at WTVN/Columbus for years.

OA:
You arent the Only One..I called him once on WHLO during one of his trivia contests and asked A question I was sure he wouldnt know..Who was the Professor On Gilligan's Island? (Of course he knew..He was the King of Trivia after all.)
He also was with WGAR 1220 before going to Columbus..His show would be perfect for a late night statewide setup...(WTVN, WTAM, WKBN, WSPD)
Edited by TimL on 08/12/05 01:00 AM.

tim-i recall listening to whlo in its original newstalk days when steve fullerton and dave lieberth co anchored am drive news, nick anthony did mornings, followed by boom boom at noon, hacksaw hamilton on sports form 6-9 and ira melman and enterprise sports from 9p to 6a. hello radio rocked and had THE Akron Canton news bureau--david5258

Re: "Only in Cleveland"--Local Talk's Woes

I'm hoping that somebody might put a Cleveland area station on the 1620-1710 kHz part of the AM band to solve this local talk problem (most likely built from scratch), but, as I think Scott Fybush said in an earlier thread, there might be Canadian issues involved here, because I don't think that frequency range is legal in Canada, and the signal might wind up there.

From what I was told some time ago, WELW/1330 tried to become a x-band signal early in the 90's. The app was, IIRC, denied by the FCC. A shame, because WELW would have had much better coverage on a X-band channel than on the graveyard 1330 channel.

Chances are that WELW could have easily been a talk rival to WTAM, all from their **tiny** studio/transmitter facility in a Willoughby neighbood...

Just one correction or two here:

I'm pretty sure Steve Fullerton never did the news block - "All News in the Morning" - though your memory about Dave Liebreth is correct.

Steve hosted afternoon drive (3-6 PM), after "Boom Boom". And after Hacksaw at night, when the station signed off later in the summer, was Ron Vereb, who also did weekends. I don't recall hearing the old "Enterprise Sports Network" at all on WHLO, which never had overnight authorization in the 70's.

Where Are They Now: After his stint in Akron, Steve Fullerton eventually ended up at Metro Traffic under the air name Bob Fuller. He passed away a few years ago in North Carolina.

Ron dropped one of the two "E"s in his name, and has been the afternoon drive star at WKBN/570 in Youngstown for a long time.

Last I knew Quinny married a pilot and was in Y-town. Craig Edwards (a.k.a. Hugh LaDeux) was in L.A. for a while.

Tim, I think the reason WTAM is not of similar stature as those other stations you mentioned is because since the 1950s, the station has not had the same owner for more than 10 years. A brief timeline:

1955?-1965 Westinghouse
1965-1972 NBC
1972-1977 Ohio Communications, Inc.(Nick Mileti)
1977-1985 Combined Communications/Gannett
1985-1987 Lake Erie Radio (Modell/Lerner)
1987-1990 Independent Group (Embrescia/Wilson/Pollack)
1990-1994? Booth American

(I basically stopped keeping track of the station's ownership changes in the 1990s.)

Those other stations have had more stable ownership.

It seems every four or five years, I think, so many Cleveland radio stations change ownership, which leads to the constant instability we have now.

Re: "Only in Cleveland"

> 1987-1990 Independent Group (Embrescia/Wilson/Pollack)

I think "Pollack" should be "Pollock" because I just saw the latter spelling on the Cleveland radio history web site. My apologies for that.
