Re: Mike_O & Others... Time for the 12+ Review [ORIGINAL REPLACED]
I a going to start off by saying that I find some of the numbers in the Spring Book highly suspect. Hopefully my math is correct in extrapolating
the ratings for the last trend and some things just don't add up with the previous two months. David Eduardo or anyone who is knowledgable about
extrapolating the ratings please correct me if I have miscalculated the ratings for the third trend that made the Spring Book.
#1 - KMJQ - A near perfect six rating and well in first place and rightfully so. Radio One has a great station in Magic 102 and knows how to program excellent formats. Houston has four groups that can program excellent radio in Houston, Radio One, Univision, CBS and Clear Channel (when CC wants to).
#2 - KLTN - Estereo Latino is 0.5 behind leader KMJQ for near five and a half rating. Univision has a leader of the pack in KLTN and will remain the #1 Spanish language station for a long time. Univision has set the standard with KLTN and I don't see any other Spanish language station beating Estereo Latino. Univision is another company that knows how to program some great radio and has done that in Houston.
#3 - KBXX - The Box is 0.3 behind KLTN and in the low fives. A nice rebound from the Spring Trends, if my math is correct The Box had a 6.4 rating for the last
rating period to have the ratings they have in the Spring Book.
#4t - KODA - Sunny is slipping and fast. Sunny is a very blah station that is about as sunny as the weather is today. With the exception of the new
jingle package Sunny is still stuck in the 1980s musically. Clear Channel needs to bring Sunny into the year 2006 or KODA will fall out of the top ten
in the next three or four months. KODA went from the mid fives to the upper fours and now near a three rating for the third Trend, which places Sunny 99 in the mid fours. One problem that is being discussed in another thread is that while KODA has some very good Air Personalities working at the station, they are stuck to a set script and the station lacks any real personality. The station would be so much better if the Air Talent that CC has at KODA could be more than liner card readers.
#4t - KOVE-FM - Recuerdo seems to have leveled off at the mid fours. The flip in formats was a very good move on the part of Univision as the ratings are nearly double those of a year ago. Congratulations to Univision for another great station.
#6 - KRBE - Surprise KRBE went up in the ratings, although the numbers don't really reflect the damage that Cumulus has inflicted upon KRBE. The next Trend for Phase One Summer will likely show a much different rating.
#7 - KLOL - Mega 101 is HOT could give KOVE-FM a run for the money. In the high three's, but if my math is correct Mega had around a high four rating in the last month, which would actually have Mega beating Recuerdo in the last ratings period.
#8 - KILT-FM - The Country music leader and KILT-FM has wisely added more Traditional Country to the playlist. KILT-FM is todays KIKK. CBS Radio showing that they also know how to program for the city that they are serving.
#9 - KTBZ-FM - The Buzz up nicely into the mid three's. The station is continuing their slow, but steady increase in ratings.
#10 - KTRH - Up to the low three's, although the last month should have been around the mid three's. KTRH obviously benefited from the demise of The FM News Channel. As sorry as KTRH is as a News station, it is the only station to turn to now. Maybe, and this is a big maybe the powers that be at CC will see the increase in ratings being the only source for News in Houston and drop the Talk programming and return KTRH back to an All News outlet. While expensive, it also can be just as rewarding financially. I would sure like to see CC give All News a decent chance on 740, I think the ratings will bring KTRH up into the four's or better. Houstonian's want and need an All News station. Get on any Freeway in Houston any day of the week and it will likely be bumper to bumper both directions and many of those people would like a station to be able to tune to at anytime and know they will have the latest traffic, weather and news within a few minutes.
#11t - KKBQ-FM 93Q is in the low three's, but I find this number suspicious because 93Q would have had a rating in the high threes the last period and I find that highly unlikely. KILT-FM went up in the ratings and I find it hard to believe that KKBQ-FM had that kind of jump in the ratings. The first summer Trend will show if 93Q has actually made a huge jump in the ratings.
#11t - KPTY Party 1049 up from the last Book, but basically in it's normal range.
#13 - KHMX - I think that MIX 965 has an identity problem. Is the station AC, Hot AC or Rock. It depends what week you are listening. MIX had arouind a mid two rating for the last month, but I would not be surprised to see 96.5 become KISS 965 within the next two months and send KRBE into oblivion. A
KISS 965 would likely seal the fate of KRBE.
#13t - KQBU - Que Buena - Puro Mexico made the biggest jump upwards of any station. With a close as you can come to a three rating, Que Buena 93.3 had to have near a four rating last month to make that kind of jump. The #1 rim-shot station that does get beat up in tropo conditions, unlike KTHT. I don't know what changes Univision has made to KQBU, if any, but they are doing something right, very right. Univision has an impressive showing this book. Even News-Talk KLAT-AM 1010 is up into the low one's for the highest rating I remember and #23.
#15t - KHJZ - The Wave dropped nearly a point from the last Book into the upper two's. This is after two Trends of the mid three's and high three's, meaning that The Wave only pulled around a rating in the one's last Trend. I find this as another highly suspicious number, I don't believe that KHJZ took that kind of dive in the ratings. If Chuck Tiller is at liberty to correct this information. I would welcome his response. It doesn't add up for a station that was on the rise in the ratings.
#15t - KKRW - The Arrow down 0.2, but the Classic Rocker didn't lose their listeners to Classic Rocker Rock 1037. I wonder if I can find out the percentage of vehicles and people at home that have Satellite Radio in metro Houston. The listeners are going somewhere and it isn't other stations in most cases. I think every vehicle comes with a CD player now as standard equipment. Maybe CD's are being played and the radio is no longer on. I know many people that never turn on the radio and only use their CD player, probably over 50%.
#17 - KPRC AM 950 stayed steady in the upper two's with their Talk programming. Down 0.3 from last Book, but even with a year ago. Yawn.
#18t - KTHT - Houston's best rim-shot signal in the mid two's and down 0.1 from the last Book and a year ago. Repeat Memo to Cox: Staff the friggin station with some great Air Personalities fulltime and you would likely have a station in the four's. Pry open your wallet and invest some money into Country Legends, Tubby can't do it all himself.
#18t - KTJM/KJOJ-FM - down 0.2 for the mid two's and Libermans's first station to make the ratings. The next is #25t KQQK/KIOX with under a one rating. I'm sure LBI is making money, but their ratings are abysmal!
#20t - KHPT - A good metro coverage station with the same sorry shitt programming (term used loosely) and the same sorry near to a two as you can get rating, where you have been forever. Does anyone at Cox do any work besides the on air people? Is anyone in Houston? Do you even care?
#20t - KLDE - Another Cox property with at one time the second best signal serving Houston, KTHT being the best coverage station by far. KTHT covers from the OK border down to near Victoria and into LA, one hell of a signal and Houston's best rim-shot with I believe KIOL now the #2 coverage rim-shot. A great job done by the Cumulus Engineers and Technicians on 1037. Down 0.4 but this Book doesn't reflect he modification from Oldies KLDE to K-Hits 1075. I sincerely
hope KLDE shows some decent recovery in the ratings now they are K-Hits.
#22 - KILT-AM - Up another 0.1, and getting closer to a two rating. Time to put The Animal KBME at #31 out of it's and our misery and program Business News on 790. Hire a man by the name Brent Clanton and give him a free reign to run the station and you will have a winner on your roster of stations. I assure you it will beat KPRC and give KTRH in it's present form a run for first place AM.
#25t - KIOL - down under a one now and last month should be around a half point rating. Too bad I like Wendy Miller and Outlaw Dave and company (Lynn "The Dynamo" Tyler is great and Loch adds to the show as well). Pam and Lisa do a great job when they are there. The Grease Monkey is pretty good also, I don't know why he isn't on the air more often? Running a jutebox most the time has hurt the station more than anything, although some of your ad spots haven't helped the station image as well as some of your contests.
#33 - KFNC - Dead last and actually had a zero rating, only made the Book from the numbers from the last two Trends. That will be the last we see of KFNC in the ratings. Dedicated to Radiodial, Thanks for asking for my ramblings! Mike
