Mikey Esparza to FM 94.9?

Don't know if it's 94-9 or 91X or maybe a station that hasn't flipped formats...yet. Either way, I think the KIOZ Mikey Show had become bloated, and this will be a great opportunity for him to shed some of the "dead wood" and return his show to it's former greatness (Pre 2005).

I think that was his second time on 105.3! Wasn't he part of the morning show on KCBQ when they were still on 105.3? Of course, KCBQ had a completely different sound, even as a classic rocker...

Mikey to 94.9 makes a ton of sense. I wonder if he is the only CC AM drive person to leave or if another big name might be headed for the hills. Does Halloran stay at 94.9? I hope he does.

I have no inside knowledge, but just looking at recent activity at Granite Ridge, my advice to DSC listeners would be: Enjoy them while you can. CC dumped the big contract of J&J, replaced them with inexpensive AJ...and rating went up. They put a very cheap, syndicated John Jay and Rich on KHTS, and while ratings haven't gone up, they haven't been disastrous. Now, they eliminate Mikey (who made the lionshare of the money on that show.) My guess is that they feel pretty good about cutting big salary talent from mornings. So far it hasn't blown up in their face. I don't know when DSC contracts are up, but I'd keep my eye on them.

And one more comment about the Mikey situation. How un-classy was it for CC to put their snide explanation of Mikey's departure on their homepage. Shauna Moran should be ashamed of herself. They paint the picture that Mikey is not loyal and greedy. Maybe he is...Hmmm...I remember the events of January 20, 2009 when CC laid off 2 thousand employees, and then again at the end of April when they laid off another 1 thousand. Did CC care about employee loyalty then? Were they motivated by greed? You can't have it both ways. CC has thrown down the gauntlet with it's employees. "It's every man for himself." If you work for CC, I hope you realize this. Everyone at Granite Ridge is disposable. Mikey is much better off without those clowns.

aGREED.

Coming from a victim of the lay-offs, I can say no one's job in that building is safe. Corporate and local higher ups have no loyalty or concern for their hard-working staff. And apparently even the on-air teams have the every-man-for-himself mentality now.

sdradio mentions possible "ch-ch-change at his new prospective station." So what format is 949 looking at flipping to? A rock station to try and compete with KIOZ? Something else?

possibly FM Talk with some strong local personalities focused male....maybe even some music mixed in as well.
Their new GM came from a market in the southeast where he had a female FM Talk/ music station that he is very proud of.

If KBZT flips, that just means more listeners for KPRI and maybe 91X. There's a good chance that KIOZ would not benefit if KBZT flipped.
KBZT just needs to go a little more mainstream. Do something more similar to FNX in Boston, and they'll pull in more 91X listeners to adjust them in a better slot.

I know Mikey personally. He's neither greedy nor disloyal, but those descriptors certainly fit the profile of the company slinging them at him. <Ahem.>

Wherever he lands, he'll be better off for it.

Well Chris is reporting at sdradio.net that Halloran is out at 949 and that Garrett Michaels if filling in. Is the afternoon slot now Mikey's and when does the flip (if there is one) happen?

From a posting on Jan 10 at mikeyshow.com:

The good news is, the announcement IS coming and it’s coming this week… maybe even on Monday.

Sounds like it won't be long before we find out officially where Mikey will land and what kind of show he will have on the new station.

Here's a stupid financial question from me: Garrett said last Monday that revenue was down 30% and it was the first time that KBZT had lost money in 6 or 7 years. That same weekend Halloran officially got the axe. Are they simply transferring whatever Halloran was making to Mikey now? Seems that if the revenue is down so much there wouldn't really be much left over to go out and hire new talent. Of course I don't claim to understand the business side of radio very much. I'm just an outside observer to all of it.

It's official
