My records were made in the early to mid 70's, when the band was not as crowded. From Midland, TX, Central Florida stations would regularly skip over the Gulf of Mexico. Conditions were good enough that during the summer, about one day out of 3, you could almost depend on the same set of stations appearing. Sometimes for several days in a row mid-afternoon. Still amazing to me - I had no idea how rare and amazing that was.

One day in the 1990's, I was driving from Barberville, FL to Ormond Beach, FL, along highway 40 when an absolutely overwhelming skip event occurred. Every single frequency was completely jammed with multiple signals swapping in and out. This lasted for the whole drive, I have never heard anything like it again. I was going to try for logs, but it was so full of stations I only got one ID at the first frequency - 88.1, and it was KTXT Lubbock, TX. This took almost half an hour, I never got any further because the band was trashed. Too much of a good thing! This was without normal Florida weather skip.

During thunderstorm season, the dry line in West Texas will bring in skip from Los Angeles. I am well familiar with LA stations, travelling there regularly. Some times, it is possible to hear them for up to half an hour, and even follow the dry line as it moves from West to East. I did this along highway 114 one afternoon until it curiously dropped off past Crosbyton. You have to be pretty much right under the dry line. Fortunately, there is usually a line of clouds to mark it.

Which leads me to believe there is some combination of weather geometry that sets up between West Texas and Florida to make the skip possible. That day in 1990, I envision the "perfect storm" of a strong dry line, reflective Gulf of Mexico, and heating over Florida.

Nice catches, Crainbebo! I always like to hear those audio files.

Is there really a correlation/causation effect between specific thunderstorm activity and E Skip?

I know thunderstorms are indirectly related to E Skip in general because they ionize the upper atmosphere but correlation doesn't always mean causation.

The dry line skip is very dependable. What I think is going on is that the difference in humidity creates a stable reflective characteristic, acting like a huge dish thousands of feet up. I know when I fly, I am not sure what the event horizon might be, and I do not do illegal DX from airplanes, but I do know that at night I can see the lights of LA at least a thousand miles out over the Pacific. It is plausible that if the dry line reflective layer stretches upward to 35 thousand feet, it could reflect stations from a thousand miles. The only way to be sure would be to log stations during each dry line event. I am going to have to let someone else take up the task, I haven't been to West Texas for 9 years. There is just no need with no more family living there.

I was wondering if you have observed the reverse? Texas FM from Florida. I only did it the one time, but that may have been for lack of effort. I was East Coast of Florida, and primarily after things North or South. I didn't really point my antenna West.

I've gotten my share of E Skip here from Texas over the years.

It was most always from the Houston area.

In 1989, there was an evening where the tropo from there was real strong. Very steady signals.

The very next evening, I was getting the same stations but it was definitely E Skip because of the rapid fading from strong to nothing and back again.

My most distant E Skip catch from Texas was Del Rio.

I haven't gotten the DX-402 yet. Waiting for a low price on that radio, then I'll purchase it and send it to Bruce for new filters. Those catches were all with the G5.

By the way, I received KTSL-101.9 Medical Lake, WA today via tropo scatter. Air 1 + match to local translator on 89.9. About 165 miles at 28.5KW, and a new log (#412). Not bad. Also received 95.3 96.1 97.7 101.1 103.5 Vancouver, 98.1 96.1 Spokane, 92.1 Victoria, 101.1 101.9 95.5 Portland OR.

Ugh! I got the G8 to catch some E-Skip, and have caught nothing yet. My record, set with my iPod radio is still KDUK Florance OR in Edmonds, though I did receive KMGE Eugene with a strong steady mono signal a couple months ago. I also had KEUG and a couple others in that day. Last week, after hearing some E-Skip from the New York GT receiver, I checked Eugene, and was able to hear KXTG's 102.9 translator which is a local for me, and the local 104.5 Way fm, also a 99 watt translator down there. What was really annoying though was I could hear KLSY from that node, but when I turned on my G8 here in Vancouver, they were nowhere to be found. Absolutely nothing unusual about the band up here that day, with the exception of KLOO 106.3 being stronger than usual.
